Oh Canada .....

It did put Canada in a tough spot. But the US request was legit. She is a criminal. So Canada could either make the arrest, and hold, extradition, or fold to Chinese pressure, which is getting really intense. I don't envy Canada's position on this. A Canadian citizen in Chinese jail had his jail sentence upgraded to a death sentence after this. Ridiculous!!

It's out of control, imo. Why won't the US take her?

While I think she should be prosecuted, lets be honest. She is a bargaining chip. The US is dragging this out to make China expose themselves to Canada and the world for the bully they are. She isn't just some citizen. She is a major power person. They are DESPERATE to get her back. The entire Huawei case is a massive exposure of China's tactics and strategy. It is important that allies remain focused against China right now.

I'm sure that the USA would take her in a minute. The thing is that the proper procedures must be followed north of the 49th. Nobody would be happy with a system that didn't follow the rule of law - especially in something as serious as this.

For instance, while a foreign nation may have a wanted notice out on her, that may be enough to detain a person, but it's not enough to extradite them. That nation (in this case the USA) must then present Canada with a formal indictment. Washington had two months to do this and used most of it.

Ottawa then has to consider whether or not the charges are valid (and some countries will try to use the system, shall we say, improperly). That took another month.

And so forth. The accused has their rights as well.

The US request for extradition may or may not be legit.

She has a court date set for January to fight the extradition while the US will try to impose the extradition.
Its up to a Canadian judge to decide whether or not the extradition request is valid.

In the case of the Canadian DRUG DEALER he was convicted and sentenced to 10 years in jail. A pretty lenient sentence considering the penalty for dealing drugs in China is death. Something he knew or should have known when he did the crime.
He then appealed he sentence and another judge said, hey, you should have gotten the death penalty in the first place...DONE. Hang the drug dealer. Canada should have the same penalty...as opposed to capital punishment as I am they should hang all the drug dealers.

The other 2 guys, yeah, the US should step up and say something to China being as its their extradition request. Canada is just honoring an agreement with the US.
The US is tippytoeing around it because Trump is an asshole

So you are against capital punishment in general but are ok with China doing it for essentially political purposes, because Trump is a jerk. Got it. I assume you ok with the US conductin executions as well then?

No, I am against it because I don't think anybody has the right to kill another, least of all a government.
Governments and cops can be crooked and lots of people are wrongfully convicted.

The only reason I'm not arguing with killing drug dealers right now is the over abundance of overdoses in Canada lately, mostly due to importing of Chinese drugs
Something needs to be done to protect people from these scum. Maybe just life in prison, and trump is still an idiot

January is a long way off. I hope they find the extradition invalid. We've been shit on enough by China.

I can't see it mattering that much. If its valid she goes to the US and it becomes their problem.

Maybe we should shit back a bit instead of pussying out

January is quite quick. lawyers gotta have time to get their shit together

I guess, lawyers aren't the fastest movers.
What would be the point? Just make us look bad, so far they look petty. I definitely think we should work on getting any Canadian prisoners out, though. Looks like we're caught in the crossfire. Hopefully judge deports her back to China, win/win for us. If the US has had time to their extradition papers in order and they haven't that's on them.

Washington had its indictment submitted to Ottawa in January, within the deadline specified by Canadian law and sufficiently detailed that Ottawa took the next step and ordered an extradition hearing. Everything since January has been Canadian legal process.

Lol, sounds about right for the Canadian justice system, but I won't complain, at least I'm fortunate enough to live in a country that gives everyone a fair trial and no death penalty.
Oh, and hockey, let's not forget hockey. :D🏒

Yes, her lawyers putting together a case to show that the US extradition request is bogus.
There is talk that to be extradited she must have broken a law that Canada recognises and she only broke a US trade with Iran law that we may not support.

Lots of legal bs to get through to make sure we don't get another wrongfully convicted case.

And Washington barely made the deadline

Goddamn, we're so amazing it just isn't fair to the rest of the world. :D:rose:

Well, of course her lawyers are trying to convince Canada that the request is bogus. Defence lawyers do the same thing in every trial. It’s what they’re paid to do.

As to the validity of the US claims, that will be up to a Canadian judge to decide.

Oh, and ‘just made the deadline’ means that they made the deadline. Submitting your income tax return six weeks early is no more honest or legal or laudable than submitting it on the final day. The US government complied with the letter of the law.

The process may be long, slow and complicated, but it’s better than living in places where law has been replaced by political expediency.

So you agree with me but feel a need to argue it anyway.

Just making the deadline caused people to wonder if they were just going to let the whole thing drop, but they didn't. Like a 7 game series they let it go to OT in the last game....go Raptors:D

Go Leafs! Juicy trades going on in the League. ;):D

Had to share.
The TTC received complaints about the robotic pronunciation of Avenue. Apparently it sounded like avenoo which sparked controversy with the public who claimed it was too Ammurikhan and demanded a change to avenew. The robot translation made it sound like aveenew. They are going to change it back in a couple of weeks to the less offensive avenew. Good for you TTC! Cuz what Canadian in their right mind wants to hear Ammurikhan pronunciations in the good ol' North?

Only in Canada, folks! :D🇨🇦
