Becky drew a sharp breath as he answered back, realizing he had seen completely into her words. His own held a meaning back to her. One hidden to keep the class from understanding, merely a student frustrated that her answer had received a counter.
A blow to her ego.
A blow to her attempt at defense.
He was showing her the man he really was.
Tom glanced over at her, a curious look on his face as he noticed her current expression. "Hey, it was a good point, I thought. Professor's just been at this a lot longer, y'know?"
"Yeah." A mumbled word. Becky was relieved to see the clock finally click to the last few moments of class, hastily packing up to leave. She didn't bother to look back. Not for Tom. Not for Tourast. Just get out of there.
The rest of her classes were far too short. Time flew too fast. She had hoped, prayed, for a day that could drag past, time that could be wasted and gone for too long inside those little desks. Instead. Hours went by like minutes. Becky's stomach knotting more and more.
He was waiting for her.
She saw him again, from that night. Chained in his basement. The look he gave her.
The way that swinging light, at times, hid his eyes from her behind his glasses. She simply felt his stare, buried under the gleam of the lenses. That solemn look. That tiny smirk he barely let bend his lips.
Someone touched her hand, Becky yelping out loudly. Papers. Papers being passed down the row, simply trying to get her to take them. She nodded slowly, taking them and hastily passing the handful behind her.
She was still in the same building.
The same floor. She knew he was in there, waiting for her. Her eyes raised to the big clock in the main hallway, her lips tightening as it slipped over to 4:59. His office wasn't far, but she was afraid to go in. To even head for that little hallway to his office. the drinking fountain instead, a long slow sip to try and get rid of the dryness of her mouth and throat. She closed her eyes, just letting the water flow against her lips, clutching the metal box tightly and just not wanting to let go.
Taking a deep breath, she finally straightened, trying to shake off the hesitation inside her.
"Miss Ellis!"
She froze, the deep accented voice behind her bringing her to a stop. Professor Rente. "Hello, sir."
"Hello, dear. Here a bit late, aren't you?"
A thin smile tried to come to her lips, realizing how close she was to Tourast's door. It looked to be closed, from here. Maybe he couldn't hear it. Maybe he wouldn't even know. "Yes, sir. A bit. I had- I've got a meeting with Professor Tourast about some of my classwork. Perhaps you could- You would like to sit in on it?"
Sit in.
Be there. Please, please. Come keep me safe from him.
"Ah, I do need to do that at some point in the semester, but not today. Tourast needs to give his approval for that, my dear." He chuckled, reaching out to pat her shoulder as he passed her. "Take care, Miss Ellis. I hope your meeting goes well."
"Thank you, Professor." Her heart sank. She had hoped.
Instead, she drew a breath, taking those last few steps down the hall, reaching up to knock on his door.
It was open.
Just enough.
She choked slightly. He hadn't heard that, had he? A new thought. Rente had made her late.
