why is native american any less offensive than indian? the same people that called them indians also named their home america when they laid claim to it. it is a bit like rubbing the indians nose in the theft.

Good point.

In Canada, we’ve started referring to places by their original indigenous names in the first nations languages, people introduce themselves as reporting from Cree land ( for example) , and our public broadcasters play modern native language music.

Inclusion and respect takes time, but in other places (like Australia) they seem to be making it work.

I use the term "American Indians" to distinguish them from "East Indians," who live in India.

Typically, a group of people aren't fond of names they get assigned by their enslavers/conquerers.

Maybe have a conversation with one and ask them.

because you already know how they feel or at least you imagine how they feel or you do not care but you did advise the asking so why deny advice well given

that is very cosmopolitan of you.

Not me, government. As a citizen, i go along to get along because its my civic duty.

My personal view is word wars are avoidance. Actions matter. And on that score, the first canadian peoples that are actively organized in building their communities in canada are doing a pretty good job.

One of the challenges of referring to indigenous people by their original names is that it’s not always clear who the indigenous people were, and what they called themselves. Migration, tribal wars, and limited records often make it impossible to identify the original occupants of a given area. A Bay Area city was all set to issue a native land acknowledgement to a local tribe this year. It had popular support until a different tribe stepped forward claiming it was the original people. History can be messy.

You're the one who seems curious to understand, so I suggested you actually talk to someone with authority on the topic who can provide those answers rather than a porn forum.

As I mentioned, typically names given to a group of people by oppressors are seen as offensive or derogatory by those who are oppressed.

All in all, I can't say I've had the need to use any term towards the group, as I don't have any discussions on the topic.

Most of the time if someone I'm talking to tells me they don't like a phrase or term, I don't use it. (Exception would be online discussion towards idiots who dont understand why they are assholes and that deserve mocking)

Yeah, no kidding. I don't even like being called "white", even though I'm not enslaved or conquered. I'm English, Irish, French, and German. I don't erase your heritage; don't erase mine.

Indigenous People
Apparently they aren’t as dumb as you want to pretend they are
You fucking know that current history hardly reflects the past
