Ashanti, Tarantino Off to See Muppets in 'Oz'
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - R&B singer Ashanti and director Quentin Tarantino are set to star in ABC's original movie tentatively titled "The Muppets' Wizard of Oz."
Queen Latifah, meanwhile, is in final negotiations to appear in the Muppet take on the classic L. Frank Baum novel.

Ashanti plays aspiring performer Dorothy Gale, who works at the diner of her Auntie Em (Latifah) in a small Kansas town while dreaming of hitting the big time.

One day, a tornado sweeps up the trailer where Dorothy lives, and she finds herself in a Muppet version of Oz. There, she meets the Munchkins (played by the Muppet rats), the Scarecrow (Kermit the Frog), the Tin Man (Gonzo) and the Lion (Fozzie).

The group's quest to get the Wicked Witch (Miss Piggy) culminates with a fight scene between Dorothy and the witch.

As the action is about to begin, the film cuts to Tarantino pitching to Kermit how the scene should be done -- a cameo written specifically for the "Kill Bill" director.

Kirk R. Thatcher, who directed NBC's successful "Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie" in 2002, is on board to shoot the film, which will air as part of the Wonderful World of Disney franchise. It will feature several music numbers but will not be a musical.

The Jim Henson Co., the creator of the "Muppets," began development on the film with ABC before the network's Disney parent bought Henson's "Muppets" and "Bear in the Big Blue House" properties in February.

Ashanti will next be seen in Paramount's "Coach Carter," starring Samuel L. Jackson. Queen Latifah, who received an Oscar nomination for her supporting role in the musical "Chicago," was most recently seen in "Barbershop 2: Back in Business." Her upcoming movies include "Taxi," "Beauty Shop" and "The Cookout."

Tarantino's acting credits include a guest arc on ABC's "Alias," as well as the 1995 feature "Destiny Turns on the Radio."

Queen Latifah just takes any goddamn job they throw at her lately.

Cool!

Latifah will be great, she always is. No matter what role ;)

Apparently Toto will be played by the Muppet Shrimp guy.

Queen Latifah is smart...this is a film being put out by Disney so she will make $$$. :)

I'm not talking about money, I'm talking about the crappy roles she gets stuck with, like Barbershop 2. She can make all the money she wants, they're still shit roles for someone as influential as she was in the late 80's early 90's. She reeks of has-been to someone who grew up on her.

Well, I haven't seen Barbershop 1..so :D

I see your point, but she's determined to break into acting, so I guess you take what they offer.

I don't look at her as a has-been. She is very talented and no matter what sucky role she takes, she always does it well.

The role of Auntie Em isn't a big role, though, is it? So it will be more of a cameo appearance for her.

read: I'm white bread, and had no idea who Queen Latifah was before today.

Great. Thats all they need is all the wives bringing all the kids to get in the way.

I wouldn't say that she "is determined to break into acting" when she's been doing it (and even producing) for at least 13 years.

I think she's already "broke into acting" ;)

Actually no.

And while we are on the subject.. just let me tell you something. You confuse the fuck out of me. I'll bet you get pleasure from that, don't you?

Other than Chicago and the one with Steve Martin, I wouldn't say she had broken in much prior to those, aside from a few non remarkable parts.

But I stand corrected ;)

(I hate when I hit enter before finishing)
