Does anyone know anything about Odessa?? I'm not sure I even spelled it correctly. Hubby is looking into that area ........ there MAY be a job transfer on his future.

Thanks in advance for any info.

I've never been there, but I worked (until yesterday) with a couple of people from there. They like it. Go back for long weekends whenever possible. Additionally, you're not so far from the NM border that you couldn't take up skiing for holidays! =)

What do you want to know in particular? I'm a couple of hours from there.

BTW - you spelled it correctly.

Thanks Nora. I turned down Texas before because it would have taken us so far away from family but this time they seem to be making an offer that may be too good to turn down this time.

and those are it's redeeming qualities...I HIGHLY suggest you visit before calling it home...

I seem to recall that football is truely the one and only sport, and that it's part of the oil region.

Odessa is a sister city to Midland. The area is definately flat. It's hot in the summer, and a cold wind blows in the winter. The joke about the Midland/Odessa area is that it's 50 miles across and one story high. Other than a small downtown area in Midland and the bleachers of the high school football stadiums, that's pretty much true.

Odessa is the heart of the "Permian Basin" oil field. When the price of oil is UP, the area booms, when the price falls, the area suffers. There are a lot of people who have lived in Midland/Odessa at one time or another, because they have come and gone with the oil industry.

There are also good things about the area. The people are "salt of the earth." The school system has a pretty good reputation. The price of real-estate is not high compared to almost anywhere. Although, the area isn't known for its beautiful lawns and gardens, you can afford a lot of "home" for the money.

Like patient1 said, football is king in Odessa. One of the powerhouses of highschool football in Texas is "Odessa Permian High School." The high school stadium is bigger than most college stadiums. EVERYONE in town goes to every home game. There was even a book (and a good one) written about the football program at Odessa Permian High School. The book is called "Friday Night Lights," and I suggest you read it if the move looks likely.

If you or your husband like to deer hunt, the area is good for that. There are a couple of lakes in the area, but they aren't pretty, by most standards. There is a nice little airport in Midland with flights several times each day to Dallas, Houston, San Antonio or Austin. I'm not sure if there is a Hospital in Odessa, but I would guess there is. There is a fairly large medical center in Midland.

Among the best things about the area is the food. You can get great steaks, and good Tex-Mex food. I even found a great little Italian restaurant near the mall on the north side of Midland.

I've never lived in the area, but I've spent a good bit of time working there over the years. I hope this helps a little. Odessa would not be my first choice of places to live, but if the job took me there, with a little effort, I could enjoy living there.

Midland's the better of the two but that aint saying much. Pretty close to Carlsbad, NM. Whitesands and Ski Apache ain't that far away. For weekend ventures, I'd look more to CO and NM than HOU or Dallas.

Thank you for all of the replies to my questions about Odessa. I got sidetracked and didn't get a chance to get back to this thread or do any searching on it. That'll be on todays agenda. From the sounds of it, it would certainly be unlike any place we've ever loved before.

Thanks again!!
Trish

Uh-oh ......... is it that bad??

I don't know, but it is near Midland, which to me is bad, plus, as Juicy indicated, it is the wrong way. She and I want to have a three way with you up north.

You're suppose to move NORTH...not south!!!!!

*sob*

Oh sweetie ......... it's only a possibility at this time. I'm just trying to get as much as info as I can right now. They're dangling a pretty nice package in front of the managers right now.

(Now how come I'm having naughty thoughts now?? Must be the idea of dangling packages. ;) )

So you're in the mood for a quickie?:p

I believe in multiple orgasms, actually. So, three or four quickies would be nice.

No problem.

Let's make a day out of it.

That would be 20 quickies, or about 5 longies. I could handle either. Trish'll make it even more interesting.

Hope she can bring some peppermint sticks, just for fun.
:p
