I work for a museum as an educator - absolutely love it, I teach kids, school groups, professional development for teachers - not sure that I would trade it for anything...pay isn't great, just enough to afford my home, keep my cat fed, and drink decent beer.

I'm an ironworker---structural steel erector. I have also been a door-to-door salesman, a cake decorator in a lebian-owned-and-operated vegan bakery, a lifeguard in a girl scout camp, a humble clerk in a mighty US Department Of, a scrivener, a linkboy, an ostler, and other occupations.

Hmmm...the cake decorator job sounds interesting. I worked with a lovely young lady in a steel shop years ago...asked her out on a date but she turned me down, nicely. She told me she was not interested in male companionship. Took me quite some time to realize she was lesbian, and then I still wanted to take her out anyway. She was intelligent, a good welder, and fun to be around. Just couldn't get over that sex thing I guess...I could have I'm sure...maybe she already had a significant other then too...not real sure.

What is a 'linkboy'? I take it 'ostler' is something to do with the railroad? Maybe?

I started my working life as a secretary, I hated it. Like Honey said: you do the work, the boss gets the credit.
That's why I started studying in the evenings.

For more than 20 years I have been teaching now, the last 12 years teaching Dutch as a second language to adult immigrants and refugees. I wish I could do that till my retirement.

That will all end in January 2005 however, courtesy of the government.

I did some real hard thinking and decided it was time for a third career. LOL
I'm negotiating with my school management right now for them to pay my study if I promise to leave them without too much unemployment claims against them.
I want to start studying in September for social worker. I have my eye on juvenile delinquents, preferably from non-Dutch origines.
Enough of those around to ensure work for the next decade.

I'll cry my eyes out to leave my job and my colleagues, but the thought of starting a new study is very exciting.
Since the rent has to be paid and all that, I'm busy applying for any job that brings in money. I'll even go back to typing, not secretary though. That would definitely turn into a disaster.

I used to be the Assistant Manager, but they changed the job description to make it all sales oriented so I resigned that and am looking for a service manager slot. That would mean I was in charge of all the compliance/red tape type stuff. Which is what I liked about being an AsstMgr. I like doing the problem solving more than the problem creating

I work in R&D for a major gun manufacturer. It's about as close to the perfect job for me that I could ever hope to have. My business trips usually involve going to the woods.

Before that I was a printer, a shop tech for a small engineering firm, and an aircraft/munitions mechanic in the Military. Like someone said in this thread earlier, I got my glow in the dark status as well.

I work for a bank, but not in a branch. I'm Admin Asst for the depts that process ATM deposits & the cash vaults for AZ & NM.

My boss isn't used to having a secretary, though, and even though I also support the managers that report to her, there isn't much Admin type crap to do so I also fill in wherever needed in the depts that my boss is over: reconciling GL accounts & processing corporate cash deposits.

Yes, it's as thrilling as it sounds.

Yes, I like my job. I'm not sure why. I'm good at it. Hell, I spent a year & a half putting ATM deposit envelopes into numerical order & was fairly happy. I can be happy in any job as long as I'm good at it.

I've no idea what I want to do with my life. I keep expecting it to come to me eventually.

It's pretty straight forward research and development of new guns and ammunition. Marketing dictates an idea of a new product that they want. We design, build and test it. Once all of that is done, it goes into production at one of our manufacturing facilities.

Me too. I was a military brat and went everywhere I shouldn't. I started work as a civilian in Defence and I was very close, too close, to things that glow in the dark - including underground with them.

I'm still surprised I had children and they seem O.K.

Last time I applied to work for someone else they asked for and insisted that I detail all training I had ever received. I gave them eight pages of A4 with just the course titles. I have no idea why a caravan manufacturer wanted to know that I had taken courses on:

- Firefighting at sea under nuclear or biological attack
- Transferring stores at sea from freighter to a submarine
- Survival in the Arctic or Antarctic
- Programming an IBM 1401 mainframe in machine code
- How to measure oil fuel in land based storage tanks
- Wiring a punch card sorter

etc...

Mine was all above ground. I was in the Air Force, and it was all aircraft launched munitions, freefall and missiles. Spent two years at a B-52 base, so I pulled a good share of alert duty. Damn klaxons going off in the middle of the night.
