If you've watched the Sci-Fi channels "The Lost Room" and loved it, your in the right place.
This thread will start AFTER the series when the key is just sitting there in the room as in the closing shot....
For those of you who HAVEN"T seen it, shame on you, it was run back to back just a few weeks ago. But in short a police officer gets drawn into a strange world he doesn't understand when he is given a motel room key. He discovers that this key, when used in any pin tumbler lock, will open up to a motel room. The room is the nonexistent* Room 10 at the abandoned Sunshine Motel outside of Gallup, New Mexico. In the room, which resets to exactly the way he found it, is:
Bed
Carpet
Ceiling lamp
Coat Hangers
Curtains
Dresser
Pillows with pillowcases
Sheets
Telephone (wall mounted rotary)
Television
Water (from the sink)
If he messes up the room, closes the door, and reopens it, the room is perfect again.
If he leaves something in the room, shuts the door, and reopens it, the item is gone and unrecoverable.
If he, with the key, stays in the room and closes the door. Nothing happens to him, and he can use the key to open ANY door he can think of that has a key-lock.
If someone is in the room without the key and the door is shut, the person is gone, and unrecoverable. Like the policeman's daughter....
He finds out that the key is just one of several objects associated with the room, and there are several groups looking for the items. The groups are:
The Collectors
The original group of Object-seekers formed some time after the Event. Led by Arlene Conroy, the manager of the Sunshine Motel, most of the Collectors were killed or driven insane after the disaster in Room 9 in 1966. The survivors hid their most important Objects in a home-made "vault".
The Legion
A cabal dedicated to collecting the Objects and stopping them from causing more harm. They claim to follow an established set of rules, including that they never kill in order to acquire the Objects, although this rule is sometimes put to the test.
The Order of the Reunification
Also referred to as "The Order" or "The New Religion." They believe that the Objects are pieces of God's corpse and must be reunited. Once so restored, members of the Order would be able to communicate with God for the first time in human history. More extreme views hold that restoring the Objects will allow one to become God, or else achieve God-like power. Unlike the Legion, The Order have no qualms about killing.
Freelancers: They are dedicated to helping themselves to the objects, they may team up with people from time to time. Or they may freelance with a permanent partner. Also there is a set of freelancers who only track the objects and sell the information, they do not want to see or touch an object themselves.
A list of known objects is below, however the series states that there was 122 objects, if I remember correctly. As we game, we will fill in the list. Some of them I already know what they do. However, you as the players will only be introduced as needed to the objects.
1) Key-Opens doorways between the center (the motel room) and point of designation and origin. For example...from your closet to the motel room, from the motel room to the bathroom in the Met.
2) Bus Ticket-When hit on the head by the bus ticket one is transported to Route 66 in front of a falling down house outside of Gallup, New Mexico.
3) Ballpoint Pen
4) Wristwatch
5) Umbrella
6) Bible
7) Toothbrush
8) cigarette package
9) radio
10) comb
11) shot glass
12) joker playing card
13) pocketknife
14) letter opener
15) matchbox
16) scissors
17) quarter
18) pencil
19) suitcase
20) razor blade
21) light bulb
22) soap dish
23) ashtray
24) Beer Bottle
25) Photograph
26) Record
27) 5 Dollar Bill
28) Movie Ticket
29) Wallet
30) Glasses
In our story we need to start with a new key-holder who gets caught up in events, so after posting your PC's I'll pick someone at random to discover the key. And then the fun begins!
*Meaning that once the key is claimed, you will no longer be able to get to the room via any means other than the key....the hotel numbers stop at room 9.
