Swamp Thing and I have desided to begin with just the two of us. We are hoping others will join.

You're a perfectly normal person, when suddenly someone scissors open your soul and puts...soemthing as large as the world inside. "I am now one of the building blocks of the world. I must serve my Imperator. I do not mind. I am part of my Imperator. When my human self became Debate, Debate became my human self. I am divine. I am a nation. The breath of god is in my soul."

Nobilis is a socal game of wonder and horror.

The World Ash

This is the World Tree and it's fruit are Worlds. One of these worlds is our own.

Imperators

They are the greatest and most terrible of the magical beings of the world. The Earth trembles at their touch, and mortal men go mad at seeing their true faces. They are Angles, both Celestial and Fallen as well as Magisters of the Dark, the Light, and the Wild. They are bitterly devided amongst themselves, each holding to their own causes...Light or Dark...Old Gods against New...Fallen against Celestial...but they all have one common foe:

Excrucians

More beautiful than angles it is said that the Creator bargained with them long ago, but failed to keep up his end. So now the Excrucians seek to destroy all that is. They say when all is destoryed then all things will awaken again within them.

The Excrucian War

Is waged in the spirit world. It's affects are felt on Earth however. When a Excruian wins there a bit of magic or soul dies here. However, when a Excruian loses there magic does not become reborn...it must be rebuilt.

To this end the Imperator's have desided not to turn away from the war, but created agents on Earth who do their work and protect their hidden places called Chancles. Chancles are difficult to make as they need one hundred nights, and a human death each night, and a bit of the Imperator's soul to be bound there.

Sovereign Powers

Are humans who are chosen bye the Imperators to receive a shard of the Imperator soul. This shard burns out a peice of their own soul and their minds are shackled and made loyal to that Imperator. They are given in return a gift in return: Power.

The typical shard is a prototype for a single aspect of reality, such as night, metal, or agony and gives the once human control over the thing. Their reponsablity is simple: Defend the aspects of reality assoicated with their Imperator, guard and govern the Chancel and it's inhabitiants, and help in the general defence of the Earth.

A Power can serve many masters: Lord Entropy, whos dominion is the Earth itself, Heaven or Hell, Dark or Light, but fristly his or her Imperator. Each Power, and everyon other Power on Earth is assoicated with a facet of Earthly existence. Something storms, or computers, or imagination. This is that Power's Estate. The Powers command their Estates and must guard them. It may seem simple, but if you should lose your Estate then even Storms can pass from the face of the Earth and be no more.

Character Creation

For this game we are using the Imperator who deals with Creativity. This Regina looks for people with skills such as storytelling, dance, play, comdey etc to become her Powers. She has newly created a Chancel and needs Powers to ward it.

To begin the game you must have a person with some skill in some aspect of Creativity.

After that, we will play through the growth of the character as he/she becomes a power and learns his/her duties etc.

I've read much of the book, but I've never acually played before. I want to be the Sovereign Power of Play, in the form of an 8 yr old boy.

Would the appropriate way to start be with the boy as a normal person, then write out his "ascension" into the Sovereign Power?

The Imperator known as Regina Orli, Lady of the Inner Light, had created a maze of such complexity and beauty it was very nearly a shame no one would be allowed to see it.

In the center she had built a temple of open white marble arches, a rectanglur pool made of a black glittering stone, and an altar of red jade.

The entire temple was adorned with carvings of mirth, joy, and playfullness with frolicing animals, humans, angels, gods, and other beings.

On the altar, over a period of 100 days, she slew 100 mortal men and women who had answered her call.

"Come, oh ye of joyful heart and winsome spirit, come and die that joy and fun not die in your world."

The Regina had thanked each brave soul that gave itself up to creation of this, her Chancle of Charades, and imparted a part of herself to it as well and set upon it two guardains to protect it and add to its power as well as their own estates.

To each Sovergen Power she created she gave rule over that aspect that was reflected in the Chancle....Play and Serendipity.

More could be added later, but she had been away from the Spirit Realm too long as it was, and some of her charges were in peril.

Andy clenched thegrocerylist in his hand and skipped down the steep, narrow stairs from the apartment he shared with his mother. He took the steps two at a time, three at a time, sometimes skipping back up a few steps before jumping a few steps further down. It was a complicated pattern, but the game was not to use any steps he'd use yesterday, while planning out which steps he wanted to have free to use tomorrow. It was a game of Andy's own invention. He made little games out of narly everything he did.

When he finally got out into the sun and smells and noise of the little brownstone neighborhood, Andy stoppped to climb the stunty tree in front of the apartment building. Up in it's twisted branches, he planned his next move. He'd go the long way around the bock to the grocery store, to see if the kittens were coming out from behind the dumpster yet. After he took the groceries back to the apartment, he would go to the playground and wait for his mother to pick him up at the end of her shift. Andy loved the new neighborhood, especially the playgroud. There were always kids around, and recently a small group of them had started joining him in his curious, elaborate games. He had something veryspecial planned for them today, involing kidnapping, a space circus, and a planet made of sponge.

Andy was lounging dreamily in the branches of the tree, looking p at the thin strip of changing clouds between the brownstones, when he felt everything . . . change.

OCC: ST, what I'd like to see is, and I am hoping that you are seeing from the same viewpoint which I think you are from your opening, that Play be in charge of games such as children make for themselves and that you are activily working against things like computer games. Team sports would be another SP and not in your domain.

Games like,
Kick the Can, Hopscotch, Tag, Four Square, Ring around the Rosey, etc, which are fadeing from the world of high tech children are in your domain and are the ones that need re-emergance.

Is this agreeable? When Sera comes she will aid you, and I will write her bit later today, after I defrag this beast and make it behave better.

OOC:

I've never played Nobilis but I know the basic ideas and terms. Could you use a Power of Poetry, probably a tortured young genius type, about to be inspired by Creativity (whom he sees as his muse) into a Noble?

OCC to Maka

Regina Orli, Lady of the Inner Light has built a Chancle of Charades to strengthen mirth, joy, and playfullness that joy and fun not die in the world

Right now we are starting at the very very beginning with all the PC Nobles in the game under one Imperator, Regina Orli. While Poetry would/could fit into her Chancle, the
tortured young genius type
gives me some pause on how to fit him in.

Suggestions?

Otherwise, yes, please join us. Swamp Thing and I were very lonely and would like more people to join. If enough do we can add more Chancels and even perhaps a Opposite Number Chancel who with the Nobels of Structure (against Play), Predicablity (against Sera), and Data (against Poetry) with whom we bicker and fight against to help our Estates.

Hmm? I just gave the first archetype that sprung into my head concerning poets and poetry. Why would he be particularly hard to fit in?

I don't see any problem with a "tortured young genius type" being chosen by Poetry.

Ok, I guess it's just me!

Maka don't forget that if you chose Poetry you MUST have poems!

Beacause you ARE poetry, it's living embodiement!

Looking forward to your frist post, and please ignore bad spelling in mine! ;)

Hey, I'm not quite sure how to play (I might want to buy this Nobilis book, sounds like a great read), but if you want someone having to do with Creativity... hmm, poetry's already chosen... haha... how about a novel writer? Sounds like a female character might be nice anyway. A troubled, intelligent, empathetic young girl who in a time of great strife finally ascended to a Power... or something... I think I understand how this works. Tell me what else I need, if you're interested. ^_^

Novel is a bit broad, can you narrow it a bit?

That's almost like saying "Written Word" lol.

Basically Lady Orli rips out a bit of your soul and replaces it with a bit of her own, granting you powers etc over one aspect of the Human Endevour, which is your Estate. You then work to strenghten your Estate by createing situations for humans to enact upon.

Your further goal is to protect the Chancle of Charades, which is one of her power bases on Earth from other Nobles and Ecursuians and possiably humans.

Your primary goal is to serve Lady Orli in any way she requires, you are her utter slave, just as your right hand is your utter slave. She is a part of you, and you are a part of her.

Currently her requirement is to band together and form an allience and streghten the Chancle and your estates. Other tasks will follow.

Hmm. Well, sounds interesting, at least...

Give me a little time to think about it. ^_^

Alrighty then:

Alain Lee

Take me aside. Tell me a sign
Send me a neon heart. Seek me inside

Alain was an intense, slightly neurotic young man. He was disgusted with the commercialism and consumerism of the world around him, a condition not helped by the work his parents elbowed him into; advertising.

Alain quit his job to write poetry. He writes it constantly, consumingly, religiously. No publishing company would publish it, though some recognized its innate quality; it was too "deep", "cryptic", "bleak" and other things that would make it a sure-fire failure with the public. Alain was by now living in poverty, and he'd gained various drug-addictions as a way of coping with his own failures.

His parents, distressed by the state their baby had gotten himself into, suggested a deal. They'd pay for one slim volume of his poems to be published, at their own expense. If it actually was a success, he could stay doing his poetry thing. If it was a commercial failure, as they were sure it would be, he would have to go back to advertising.

Alain, despairing, accepted the deal and one volume of his verse, entitled Neon Thickets was duly published. Some critics liked it, but it was a big flop financially.

He was preparing to kill himself rather than go back to advertising at the time of his Ennoblement.

(I'm thinking the Excrucians are somehow behind the growth of commercialism and banality in the modern-day world, in an attempt to wipe out concepts like poetry forever, thus giving Alain a reason to really, really hate them)

Sounds good to me!

However, instead of being from the Chancle of Charades how about being from another one (Since Charades is for mirth, and your Noble is rather dark) and be an ally of the Charades.

The way I see it the choices can be:

You are another Imperator's Noble and an ally
You are from the Lady of the Inner Light Chancle of Depth.

You choose.

Rena O'Connor

Age: 17
Gender: Female
Description: Dark hair, green eyes, pale skin, medium height, slender build. Soft, sensitive expression, most of the time, and often smiling sadly. Pretty, in a "girl-next-door" sort of way.

--Power: Alternative Reality Novels--

Science fiction and fantasy fiction, and to some extent modern fiction, tend to be Rena's domain. Exploring "might-have-beens" and alternative possibilities. Rena is quiet but kind on the outside, but filled with turmoil on the inside. She's cheerful and can sometimes be enthusiastic, but asks a lot of questions of herself, and of others, in her writing. Of course, in her short life so far, she's never published anything, but her new mistress might have sensed a budding destiny within her...

Rena actually tends not to read many science fiction or fantasy novels. She is not, per se, a member of an "alternative crowd" in her high school. If you asked most people in her high school about her, you'd probably here: "Oh, Rena? She's a sweetheart. Very smart, too. I don't really know her that well, though." Rena generally keeps to herself.

Rena's father is a deadbeat and her mother died of drug addiction and alcoholism only a year previously. She has recently begun living with a guardian, a friend of the family, but Rena still grapples with grief for her parents. She ascended while watching the muddy stream near her guardian's house flow, thinking about the constant fight that is her life and seeing the cycle in the stream... perhaps receiving an inspiration for her writing.

(She and Alain might get along fairly well. ^_^)

Rena may or may not be pleased with her ascension. Time will only tell if she is willing to work for a goddess who deals in entertainment...

Is this okay? Is my power still too general? I might be better suited to Depth as well...

I was thinking that also, altho your character offers more hope than Poetry's seems to.

I feel a thought forming.....

Give it a few mometns to bake and I'll get back to you.

Chancel of Depth sounds good to me, since we should probably try and all have the same Imperator. I guess I hang fire on this choice until I see what this new idea is you have, though

I'm looking up something in the books to gain clarity for my idea....

I haven't just left.

Ok.

The Chancel of Depth is Regina Orli's focus for bringing out the hidden talents of people...the main goal is for the Inner Light which is her providence to become revealed.

I am having trouble finding what I am looking for, arrgggh, but I don't want to leave you hanging, so we will go with this for the time being.

Two Chancels (for now)..one for the light of heart, and one for the heavy of heart...but both guided by briging out the Inner Light.

Sounds great. I don't really know the terminology, I'm afraid, but things should work out alright.

I'm not exactly sure which Rena should be, though... I suppose the Heavy of Heart, but she doesn't often appear to be sad. She just is inside.

Which do you think is more appropriate, Polite?

If you changed to Creative Insperation then you could be happy one day and sad the next, because it would just depend on who you wanted to inspire that day and to what did you want to inspire them to.

You can inspire someone to write Dr. Seuess one day and Dairy of a Sucide the next.

Like Sera, her Estate is happy suprizes. Now, when she leads a hit man to find his prey it isn't very happy for the prey, but it is for the hit man. She doesn't really draw the line anymore between good and evil as long as someone gets a happy surprize. When she became a Noble her concern was her Estate, her Chancel, and her goddess.
