Do computers have built in obsolescence.
My pc is not that ancient, only 4 years old. 200mhz Pentium, 16mb RAM, 3.2gb hard drive etcetra. But I've noticed it's run slower and slower all the time since I've had it
It's only got basic software, MSWorks etc. I've added a photo programme, Virus protection and messenger Services. But no power soaking 3D games. But even so it's now slowed to the point where I read a book while I wait for Lit' pages to load !
So while reading magazines about improving computer performance, I find the interesting fact that " 64 mb of RAM is now considered the realistic minimum for running Windows and it's applications" !
I mean WTF! When I was first intested in PC,s the red hot thing was a 486 with 4mb of RAM (and it wasn't that long ago!) When I bought mine it was a good middle range machine more than adequate for a small business and internet surfing. So who's moved the goalposts? Why the extra power?
I know I could buy a new computer , four times as powerful, for half the money I spent then, but I dread to think what the value of my present one has now depreciated to.

Anyway I start looking into my pc's diagnostic programmes, sure enough that 16mb of memory is now just about enough to start itself up. To cope with anything more energetic it's had to build itself a 30mb swap file on my hard disc. Which also solves the other problem of what was whirring under the desk all the time.

So there will now follow a short intermission while I disembowel my tower and wonder what size of DIMM I need to buy.
~Scratches head~ Now is live, blue, or brown ?

I sympathasize with you.

I buy a new pc about every other year. The old one gets moved to the second position to be used as a kids workstation/homework helper/word processor. The really old one gets kicked out of the house and donated to a local shelter for abused women or a place that they take abused kids or someplace like that. I get the new puter.

However, toward the end of the second year (that would about now with this puter), i get to feeling, well, damned impatient at how slowly things are moving. In my area, we don't have DSL lines or anything beyond your basic modem lines for access so i'm stuck from that perspective, too.

It's really annoying, isn't it, waiting for stuff to load?
I always have games open underneath (usually Scrabble or solitaire), or email that i'm writing, or something else to do but i *hate* having to wait.

Advances in technology sure come along quickly.

hang on.... don't hurt that lawn just yet...

I bet your HD is running all the time.... it sounds like you just need to get mor RAM for the beast...

i've got 384 MB of ram.... some comps can take 1028+ megs of the stuff...

you can probably pack 128 megs in your machine.... you might want to think about putting the max in...

oh....and............ yup.... as soon as a comp is delivered........... it's obsolete...

Happens to the best of us Prob...

i'm just glad technology hasn't caught up with Souls yet...

:D

Throw it out on the lawn.

Can't.
just mowed the lawn for hay. ;)

Mink Soul,
Good, you reached the same conclusion as me. According to my handbook . DIMM stands for Dual Inline Memory Modules. Just got to work out how many to fit.

whoever made your comp....

probably has a web site.... go there, they should be able to tell you...
