We are not a diligent people anymore...we like to gossip too much.
Some entity will always hold power...in America's unique case, when its people cede their power, ageless government will naturally command it.
We are not a commanding people anymore...we prefer toleration. And we've become comfortable with government establishing the example.
If one believes that government has become tyrannical, only one option remains for a patriot...that was the lesson of 1776.
That the "conservative" part of America today simply wants to complain and b!tch and vote about tyranny, but doesn't desire to make the blood sacrifices mandatory to depose it...

Seriously though, look at the talking points in right wing leaders (Newt, Palin, Limbaugh, Beck). It's a narrative of fear and bigotry against gays and Islam. And this narrative wasn't always as pronounced.

Correct, the leaders of the Republican party don't actually hold office. The leaders of the left do.
None of those guys holds a job in political leadership.
Two of them are ratings-driven entertainers.
I'll buy that you don't like them, but their collective impact on any of the factors you name is zero. If people listen to them about e.g. concerns about Islam, it's because the people have the same concerns themselves, arguably for well-founded reasons. There are plenty of other, official leaders saying the opposite but being dismissed as out of touch.
