At basketball fundraiser, Obama says opponents play "dirty"

(Reuters) - With a nod to his basketball star host, Michael Jordan, President Barack Obama used a sports analogy at a fundraiser in New York on Wednesday to describe the election campaign and his opponents, who he said played "dirty."

"I can't resist a basketball analogy. We are in the fourth quarter, we're up by a few points, but the other side is coming strong and they play a little dirty," Obama told a group of supporters, saying his team was ahead but had some injuries.

"I'd say there's about seven minutes to go in the game. And Michael's competitiveness is legendary, and nobody knows better than Michael that if you've got a little bit of a lead and there's about seven minutes to go, that's when you put them away."

Obama and his presidential rival, Republican Mitt Romney, have been locked in an increasingly negative campaign for months and both sides have accused the other of divisive moves.

Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts, is raising more money from donors than Obama and has greater support from outside groups known as "Super PACs," which have poured millions into negative advertising before the November 6 election.

Obama, an avid basketball player himself, joked that Jordan, a former star player for Obama's hometown Chicago Bulls, and the other players at the event were dwarfing his star power.

"It is very rare that I come to an event where I'm like the fifth or sixth most interesting person," he said, drawing laughter, after being introduced by Jordan.

"Usually, the folks want to take a picture with or sit next to me, or talk to me -- that has not been the case at this event, and I completely understand it."

Of course he thinks they are playing dirty. They're doing the exact same the Prez has been doing for the last several years.

MICHAEL WALSH ON BIDEN’S RAID ON TAMPA:

In an electoral season of appalling gutter politics, the Obama campaign is about to test a new bottom. Contrary to tradition — which dictates that Democrats and Republicans respectfully lie low during their rivals’ presidential nominating conventions — Vice President Joe Biden will land in Tampa, Fla., during the Republican convention to try to upstage Mitt Romney’s coronation.

“Are you going to Florida?” Biden joked to reporters during a campaign stop in Minneapolis the other day. “I’m going to be the speaker at the convention.”

Such trash talk is typical of the increasingly deracinated veep, whose motor mouth now seems beyond the control of even campaign consigliere David Axelrod’s well-oiled media machine.

But what’s really behind this stunning example of in-your-face poor sportsmanship?

The heckler’s veto, that’s what.

A “heckler’s veto” is an attempt to shout down political speech by preventing its expression; rather than fighting it with more speech, the heckler seeks to silence his foe, marginalize him as outside the mainstream, beyond the pale of civilized discourse and unworthy of a fair hearing.

Since the day Paul Ryan was announced as Romney’s VP selection, the Democrats have barely missed an opportunity to assault the new GOP team — sometimes even physically.

It makes me wonder if their internal polls say they’re heading for a big loss, leading them to try anything that might be a game-changer. They’re certainly not acting confident. However, I wonder about the competence of anyone who thinks that the way to boost Obama’s chances is more Joe Biden!

" I have about as much chance of finding a job as winning the lottery"

This is what a well educated, human resources woman told me today. She was laid off and cannot find a job.

That aint good...

That's just life in the modern world.

One thing is certain. Basketball analogies suck even more than baseball analogies.

Look on the bright side. Somebody might quote him.:D

upstaging? That's just rude and unprofessional. Why would you go to the states that your'e weakest in while their convention is going on?...

Thats just life today, ain't what it was 5 years ago.

It's what life was becoming five years ago and it's not going to get any better any time soon. Hell it's what life was becoming ten years ago people were just too stupid to see what was happening.

2002 sucked too, just not as bad but that was right when the downfall started. Don't get your hopes up any time in the near future. We aren't going to see prosperity in this nation for at least a decade probably longer than that.

That's the thing. We aren't off track. Where we are is where we've been aiming to get for centuries. The only part of this that is accidental in anyway is the housing crash which sped things up a bit but this is where we've always wanted to be. We just didn't actually have a plan for what then and so here we sit and rot. Give it a decade or two. Until then I recomend you get comfy.

I don't have a decade or two.....

Then your rightly fucked and I hope you did well enough prior to this to coast through this. Maybe you'll get lucky and die before anything ugly happens.

Fuck that. I like the modern world and have no intent of going beyond the Thunder Dome. If you crazies bring that upon me I will not be pleased and I will dedicate my life to making everybody I view as responsible suffer.

Not really. I don't hold anybody in particular responsible for us getting here and I'd love to make you all smile if I could.
