So, the choice is between either buying aircraft that is specifically designed for Afghanistan and for which the Afghani pilots are already trained on, or buying an American helicopter that might not require expensive alterations to do what it's needed to do and spending extra time and money training the Afghani pilots to work them.

Doesn't seem like outsourcing to me. Seems more like simple good sense in not chucking money and time down the toilet.

It's not profitable to design a Copter to replace the MI-17 for Afghanistan. They'll only need a couple of hundred and that's not enough to make a production run of a new design.

Even at $18M apiece than having Boeing gin up a new design, even if it is just stripping a Blackhawk down so the Afghans can fly it.

The real answer is how do we get ourselves out of Afghanistan and our expensive equipment, soon. Even if we "Win" in Afghanistan, hardly likely since we don't have any idea what that would look like, what would we achieve? It is very unlikely that we will "Win the Hearts and Minds" of the Radical Islamic minority. Very likely we will have to do Arc Light raids to cut off the Paki brorder before the year is out.

Commendable sentiment, but highly impractical.

The Afghanis know how to fly...and more importantly fix...the MI-17's. They are far less difficult to maintain and are more rugged...our equipment is of higher quality but requires a level of expertise to fly and fix that the Afghanis don't have and there's no time to train them. The MI-17's were designed for service in Afghanistan so why not use them?
