Anyone think this isn't
a provocative move?
Yeah, yeah, I read what the official line is but perhaps walking in the other man's shoes would be a better approach.
Russia has been over-run by invaders for centuries. The Mongols, the Mongols allied with the Tartars, the Japanese and Chinese, the Teutonic Knights, the French (along with the Germanic tribes), and the Germans. The traditional path for invasion from the West is though Poland. So you might understand why the Russians, an already paranoid people, might just get a little more antsy with us send a few thousand troops and upwards of a hundred main battle tanks over to their western border.
Putin isn't our buddy, and he does have as a goal the re-establishment of Russia's traditional sphere of influence among the Slavic nations. But I can't see where fueling Russian paranoia is in anyone's best interests. Putin is going to have to move troops off the Amur River to counter this perceived threat, thus giving the Chinese, who believe, and always have, that Eastern Siberia is THEIR natural territory, pause to think that maybe it's time for them to make a move.
Hopefully Trumps advisors are wise enough to recommend that he pull back from this ill advised geopolitical chess move.
