Boosted by rising US jobs figures, President Barack Obama's approval rating has hit the magical 50-percent mark and he has opened up a double-digit lead over his likely Republican opponent in November, a poll showed Monday.

The poll by the Washington Post and ABC television found Obama reaching the 50 percent barrier -- seen as a critical threshold for an incumbent seeking reelection -- for the first time since Osama bin Laden was killed last May.

Pollsters said Obama's ascent comes as the US economic recovery appears to be finally taking hold, with voters appearing more confident and comfortable with his policies.

The latest US figures released last week found that the unemployment rate has fallen to 8.3 percent, the fifth straight monthly decline since August, when it was 9.1 percent.

You also saved Detroit City, Mr. President.

I'm all in.

Better be careful though.

Lots and lots of Romney supporters on here.

People who think that if Mr. Romney makes thousands and thousands of dollars for a speaking engagement, that it's not that much and more than okay.

If Romney becomes chief, I'm fucking moving to The Virgin Islands.

The British side.

An improvment, to be sure.

But, if you have to "soar" to get to 50, you're not exactly in awesome shape.

More important for Obama is that the trend is pointing up and has been since it hit bottom in October.

Detroit would cease to exist if not for the auto industry bailout, which in turn saved the US economy!

Or really ever. We might be better off bulldozing the entire city and starting over.

I don't think there are a lot of Romney supporters. There are a lot of anti-Obama supporters.

Since when did the libs have stupid parrots? I thought that was against some tacit rule that nobody to the left of Busybody shall post in this fashion.

Still more important for Obama is that there is not a single Pub in the race who does not already look ridiculous compared to him.

It doesnt bode well for the GOP that their front runner and the president are running about equal on the unfavorable rating polls.

I can see why Obama would be polling around 45% unfavorable, but the general election hasnt even started yet, and Romney is around 45% as well.

I'm not surprised. I don't like any of the candidates on either side. I'm hoping the aliens show up before the election and we can vote one of them in. At least we know they'd be bipartisan. :D I think Obama will win.

It is difficult to feel much enthusiasm for President Obama because of the state of the economy. Nevertheless, on the issues of taxing and spending the Republican Party is significantly to the right of the political center. There is much support for raising taxes on the rich, and little for cuts in Social Security and Medicare.

The Republican Party reminds me of the Democratic Party during the late 1960s and early 1970s. The Democratic Party moved to the left because of the War in Vietnam. The electorate moved to the right because of the rise in crime, the black ghetto riots, and policies like school busing and affirmative action.

The GOP also reminds me of those cartoon characters who would walk off of a cliff, and not fall until they looked down and realized that there was nothing beneath them.
