Oatmeal

I do the standard serving size of 1/2 cup of oats simmered in 1 cup of water. That is the equivalent of two slices of bread. Less than 3 grams of fat. Only 5 grams of protein. Typical ounce of protein should have 6-7 grams. So it's not a high amount of protein all things considered. I'm not big on milk and I don't think it needs it when it comes out of the pan.

I have added blueberries and mandarin orange segments for fruit - I'll add whatever fruit I have, that's not the problem. I need something to round it out - fat and protein. The peanut butter helps but realistically a couple teaspoons is not going to bridge that gap. Maybe I just need to have some sliced cheese with it.

I think I want to try the cinnamon - but with some chopped apples instead. I just got a fresh bottle of the cinnamon I like. :D

How do you do oatmeal?

Microwave
1 Serving

1/2 cup oats
1 cup water or milk
Dash of salt (optional; for low sodium diets, omit salt)
Directions:

Combine water or milk, salt and oats in a medium microwave-safe bowl.
Microwave on HIGH 2 1/2 to 3 minutes; stir before serving.

Throw in some Costco dried blueberries before cooking for some extra flavor. Brown sugar if you need it.

I forgot I have oats. I mostly cook rice when I want a pot of grain. A big scoop of peanut butter is enough flavor.

If I do it just for me I grab two first-fulls and sometimes a little bit extra, add water visually and leave it overnight. Then boil it on the stove (at home we have very good tile firewood stove built by a guild master, although he nearly walked out on me when I wanted it taller than traditional, the same height as the freestanding electric stove and the standard kitchen counter, in his mind it was blasphemy somehow, but eventually he relented). If it is done for more than just me, it's usually someone else doing it and I don't know how they calculate it. In that case I get whatever is left in the pot after everyone else has taken their share, and it's usually a little less, but sometimes more.

cooked on the stovetop with either cardamom or cinnamon, sometimes both. a bit of butter and soy or almond milk to make it more creamy. raisins and/or walnuts when i'm feeling decadent. when i was in gradeschool i used to come home for lunch and my mother would make me oatmeal, it's still my comfort food.

The first thing I do in preparing oatmeal is to select the right brand. Many oat farmers now use glyphosate (aka Round-up) to terminate the crop quickly and prep it for harvest with a combine. Elevated glyphosate levels are now being delivered in oatmeal to local stores around the U.S., including in some baby foods. If you google glyphosate-free oatmeal, you can find brands that don't use that herbicide to accelerate harvest.

I raised and combined oats for many years in the South, and never needed to use herbicide to expedite harvest in the Spring. It's a winter crop in most regions of the U.S., and I would follow it by planting soybeans in the same field for the summer.

Before I cook rolled oats in the microwave, I premix it with walnuts and dried fruit. I add fresh fruit on top.

I try not to unless it's topping an apple crisp. My mom made us eat it for breakfast far too many times. She put raisins in it. I hate raisins. The remind me of dead flies. My mom would make a sick face and gagging noises, telling us she didn't know how we could eat it.

Now if I do have to eat it, I'll put a little brown sugar on it.

I go simple. Brown sugar while its hot so the sugar melts a bit. Small splashes of milk. Eat a little, apply more brown sugar and another couple splashes of milk. Repeat until finished.

Oatmeal is thoroughly unpleasant. I'd much rather mix in some nuts and dried fruit and chuck a fistful into my yoghurt.

^^^ I put some in pancakes before I cook them.

Ohh, and raisins too.

I have rediscovered porridge oats (aka oatmeal)

I usually add milk, and a slice of ginger (weird I know) put in microwave for 2 mins. Add some honey and walnuts, maybe some berries.

Or I add milk and cinnamon. Microwave for 2 mins. Cook some sliced apple separately and throw that in.

Or I put oats in a bowl. Pour in some coconut water or plain water with a bit of apple juice. Throw in nuts/raisins or fruit or even better, grated apple! Leave in fridge and have bircher muesli

All the microwaved oats can be done on the stove if you want to stand there stirring, stirring, stirring.

It's true though. Oats only keeps me full for about 1.5 to 2 hours and then I'm starving.

OMG I might try the ginger.

I like Steel cut oats. Cook so not to soft. Sometimes , honey or teaspoon of my favorite jelly, or peanut butter. Lately its been, multigrain toast with peanut butter .

For more protein sprinkle some powdered peanut butter on top.

You can add any kind of fruit (fresh, frozen, even dried) to add fructose and sweeten it up!

old school cooking, steel cut or instant, it works well with all of them
