thanks!

I think "nymphette" can also mean a young nymphomanic, BB.

"nymphet" is infact a literary term, and since the person calling me this is an english teacher, it was a short jump to which definition was being used.

A nymph is a female forest spirt, a nymphet is a young nymph, although its not clear how young. The greeks didn't elaborate...

Point being, "nymphette" would be redundant. Nymphomaniac or "nympho" would cover all ages regardless.

Bunny, perhaps he was insinuating that you weren't a mature nymph.

;)

I wouldn't say you were uncultured just because you didn't know what it means. Nympho is a really common term that people use for girls who like to sleep around a lot. However, I've never heard someone call someone else a nymphet, so I think it's safe to say that you aren't uncultured.

LC is right.

We can't know everything. You learned something new and now you know it. We never stop educating ourselves or absorbing culture.

The only people who are uncultured are those who don't embrace culture.

ok, nymphet is a term used in nabokov's "lolita". it's the word coined to describe young girls that are sexually attractive to older men. so i understand now what it means (although i did at first think about those mystical wood creatures) and since it didn't seem to spark an instant familiarity here either, i'm going to say that the reference is obscure and i'm not uncultured for letting it fly over my head! ^_^

bunny -- Maybe it depends on the kind of circle that you run in. After all, if you're hanging out with older men who find young girls attractive, they're very likely to have read Lolita. In fact, they probably have it memorized, with chapter headings and page numbers included.

English teachers, too, are likely to be familiar with the showing off of literary allusions.

I would hardly call you uncultured for not falling into one of those categories!
