Number of votes goes down?

I thought I read the explanation for this somewhere, and I thought it made sense, but have been looking for some time and am unable to find it.

I noticed that the vote count for three parts of my story went down by one each between about 9:30am and noon, my time.

What's the story (pun intended) with that?

The Web site does periodic sweeps, deleting votes it considers fraudulent (on a formula did doesn't share with us).

That's the explaination I couldn't remember. And that causes me to remember that I read it in an ariticle someone wrote about Literotica statistics rather than in one of the FAQs, which is where I was looking.

Thank you.

VMA.

Now I'm getting fascinated about how this works. I've watched the vote counts on my stories bump down multiple times. One jumped down by nine votes.

I"m a bit interested in how the detector works. But I'm a lot more interested in why anyone would bother to do enter false votes, positive or negative. What's the point in driving someone else's average up or down?

Fans will up-vote their favorites, and down-vote stories that threaten that author's "rightful position" in toplists.

People will down-vote kinks they don't agree with.

The LW readership will downvote anything.

No matter how ridiculous it seems, it's certainly happening.

Odds are that some of the votes swept are perfectly legitimate, though. People living in the same household. People reading and voting from the same coffee house. People who have an IP that's too close to a problem voter slapping low scores on a bunch of stories, etc.

I've had a story that had more signed public comments than surviving votes in the past.

It's imperfect, but the alternative ( so long as anonymous voting is allowed ) is leaving the scores up to whatever jerk has the most time on their hands to click buttons.

I know, abstractly, that some people are dits. But I often don't think to apply that knowledge to situations I'm involved in myself.

By the way, love the quote.

Thanks for the insights.

I also noticed that several of my stories went up a few bits of a point after the votes were cleansed the other day.

What's the point in driving someone else's average up or down?

People are vain. If they don't like a story, or something is in the story that they disagree with - sexual or otherwise - they may just slam it with a 1 to spite the faceless author. After all, they're not a real person, just a robot somewhere churning out words for consumption by equally faceless masses.

It's unfortunate, but people are quite capable of pettiness.

But don't worry about it too much! It's everywhere on the internet. When you don't see and hear the people you're interacting with, we all lose a part of the human element of communication. People don't connect the consequences of being a jerk on the internet to themselves the same way they would in real life - mostly because there are rarely consequences on the internet.

Yes, I saw that happen too.

Well, I'm not really bothered by it so much as I find it interesting. The site, itself, treats us all the same. The fraudulent votes and the removals, even if they hit valid votes, are part of the Literotica playing field.

As for the Internet, I'm really only on email and post on this site. I look at Tumblr, but don't post there. I've got little experience with blogs and forums and interactive things like voting and comments on this site.

Thanks for taking the time to help inform me.

Loving Wives. It is a troll playground and not for the weak of heart. :)

It's also known as the shark tank. If anyone decides to dip a toe or more into LW's let me know as I have shark resistant suits for rent. ;)

LW ain't for the faint of heart or people with thin skin.

I see. Well, you've piqued my interest. I'll have to take a look. Perhaps peeking around a corner would be a good idea?

Looking in from the outside isn't bad. But if you submit a story you will get a lot of trolls attacking you, no matter what you submit.

This is all very interesting. These attacks are in the comments for the story or in a forum?

If the former, can you point me to a story or three that show this?

If the later, where would I find an example exchange?

Thanks.

In the comments for the story usually. I haven't encountered it in the forums
Here is a link to one of my stories that the trolls really had fun with.

I'm not saying they weren't right, understand, but harsh, yes I will say that. :D

Story isn't exactly my cup of chai, though the writing seems pretty good. Really, my only complaint would be that, except for Mark and Trisha, I had trouble keeping track of who was who.

It's hard to be sure when a comment consists of only three words, but I think one of your very brief nasty commentators (or another similarly minded) also gave me my only negative comment. I had to look up the meaning of "troll" in this context, but it certainly fits.

I wasn't particularly inclined to write a Loving Wives story anyway. It's not were my interests lie. I think I'm even less inclined to do so now.

Thanks for the example. Very interesting.

I wrote an LW story for a Halloween contest ages ago, http://www.literotica.com/s/a-ghost-of-a-chance-2 which I thought was a romantic story.

I got vilified in comments just because the wife 'considered adultery' even though she stayed faithful to her husband.

sr is a bit economical with the verity! We know that 'sweeps' remove low 'troll' votes - a higher level for contests and search multiple posts from the same IP. Not perfect but not bad for free.

Thank you. I get the "Not my cup of chai." :D It's not intended to be for everyone. But it is fun to stir up the trolls.

I post to Loving Wives almost exclusively. Its a gladiator arena as all suggest.

But I noticed something, over time my scores rise from the dregs toward the rim of the barrel. And my scores generally start low, often in the 1s.

So I looked at my scores in the 4s to determine what readers like.

They like simplicity, clarity, and intensity, with a good pace and no navel gazing or soul searching. I created a gay character who likes hurting people more than sucking dicks, and that is working. He looks like Francis Dolarhyde of RED DRAGON, talks like Michael Jackson, and takes no prisoners or shit.

Every time I release a story, my numbers jump around wildly. Over time they begin to flatten out as the story ages and the hackers begin to ignore it. The stable number is the only one worth looking at and it takes at least a week or two to develop.

I live off the email responses. They are much more constructive and don't involve some algorithm that can be manipulated. I have learned a great deal about homonyms this way. My ignorance has no bounds :)

I just read the comments on the story. I see some disapproval of the wife's intentions, but I didn't really get the "vilified" part. They mostly seemed to be in the nature of "great story but" nature.

Not sure what "sr" in "sr is a bit economical with the verity!" means.

Yes, I like getting messages a lot. Intelligently written negatives are often very informative.

I'm, generally, into stories where I get to know the participants. So I write about people I'd like to get to know.

Never the less, I've enjoyed quite a lot stories that get right to the point. I've just looked up your stories. I'll have to read a couple.
