FL Motel Goes All-Nude to Boost Bottom Line

Mon Apr 30, 2012 3:37pm EDT

When times get tough, the tough get naked. At least that's what a Florida motel owner hopes, as he turns his 32-room property into a potential magnet for nudists.

The Fawlty Towers Motel in Cocoa Beach, Fla., is set to go clothing-optional May 1, after years of declining business and increasing competition from larger chain hotels, its owner told Florida Today.

Going nude wasn't a snap decision. Owner Paul Hodge first had to convince his skeptical wife. And he has yet to sway some of his concerned neighbors, who fear the soon-to-be nude motel will expose tourists, and local children, to some unwanted sightseeing.

"Young people surf on that beach," one local woman complained to WFTV. "What kind of a message is that sending them? It's inappropriate."

But Hodge says his nude motel plan is all about his bottom line. "It's sort of a make-or-break situation," he told Florida Today. "We can't pay ourselves in winter. We had to scrap health insurance. Every year it gets a little bit worse."

To prepare for his guests to bare all, Hodge hired a lawyer and consulted with the American Association of Nude Recreation. They apparently found no state or local laws that would stand in the way of Hodge's plan for unabashed indoor nudity.

While that may be the case for Hodge's nude motel, other business owners may want to think twice before adding a naked twist to their business plans. Nudity may reclassify your business as "sexually oriented" (as one nude maid service in Texas recently found out), and may require new permits.

Failure to follow local laws can lead to costly fines. That's why it's wise to follow Hodge's nude motel preparations, and consult a local business attorney.

Hodge's nude guests, however, may still face criminal charges of indecent exposure if they set foot -- or technically, their naked private body parts -- outdoors.

As for nude motel owner Paul Hodge, neither he nor his wife plan to remove any clothing when the Fawlty Towers Motel gets its first nude guests on Tuesday. He's hoping the motel's bartenders, however, will at least go topless.

Nude motels are not a new idea. I know of at least a dozen between California and Texas but most are outside small towns or in rural areas. Most advertise as bed and breakfast type places.

Linked in the Earth Day thread, which is serving as a transition until time to post the Nude Day thread ( when I'll link it again )

This concept can open a lot of doors for locations -- so long as the characters stay indoors.

For me, that's always proved a major issue, and I think expanding off this thread might just solve that problem in future years.

The places I know of in California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas are all walled in with large courtyards in the middle usually with a pool. Most are a mixture of Nudists and Swingers, adult only. There are a couple for just nudists and the whole family can stay there.

If anyone needs more information just ask.

The guy's got a motel called Fawlty Towers (yes, yes, I know the connection) and he's surprised business is going downhill?

The main concern that I can see for the Florida operation is that it appears to be right on the beach. I can foresee nude people sneaking out on the beach and trouble resulting.

In years passed I use to live in that area and visited it often. Nude people on the beach at night would be nothing new as long as they are careful. In certain areas topless wasn't even ticketed, even back then.

I find it hard to believe there actually is a motel named Fawlty Towers. That was the name of a hotel in a very funny British sitcom.

ETA: Okay, I guess it's for real.

I stayed there once when I was working for a travel agency. It is a typical roadside motel 2 floors rooms open to the outside Nice pool and bar right on the beach. I paid $20/night over labor day weekend for 3 nights, back in 2008. This motel was surrounded by Luxury hotels and spas that are gleaming modern hotels and spas. It definitely showed it's age, but it was clean and well maintained.

Don't see how with rooms opening to either a street or the beach they can d clothing optional, even the pool is visible from the beach. I wish them luck and I may stop in and have a drink next month.

In the UK, changing a motel to a Nude motel would be seen a last gasp of desperation of a failing business, on a level with public houses offering Pole Dancing, or even worse Pole Dancing Classes.

Why are Pole Dancing Classes worse than Pole Dancing? Because it shows that the proprietors are so broke that they can't afford to pay real Pole Dancers. They hope that an ageing (and cheap) former Pole Dancer can train local girls to be cheap performers.

In the UK, nudists are well catered for by dedicated sites that the nudist organisations own and run for themselves. A "Nude Motel" wouldn't attract them.

But - the desperation of the proprietors and their inexperience of nudists could make several plot bunnies.

In he US Nudeism is not as well understod as it is in the EU. Here is still has connotations of wife swapping and god knows what else to the uninformed. I live in florida and to my knowledge there is one nudist resort in the county to the southh of me no where near the ocean. There is one nude beach that is difficult to get to. This is a big step for nudeism. For years the COunty I lived in has been trying t put the 4 strip clubs that we have out of business. Court cases, undercver stings, and blatant harassment failed. Finally theu went after the only insurance company offering insurance t clubs in this county that allowed nude dancing. They were able to get the insurance companies licence pulled and 3 of the four clubs are now out of business. The last club left is too expensive for most locals s we have t go to a neighboring county where the clubs are cheaper and the area is mmore dangerous and the girls wear pasties and french cut panties. Hell I see more on basic cable than in these clubs.
