I received an E-Mail today from a lady who had just read one of my stories. (Beach Party) Her feedback on the story was touching and well thought out. Her criticism was about a minor part of the story, (an article of clothing the main character was wearing.) The rest of her letter was in two parts. One was about something she thought the husband should have done, and I will rework the story to incorporate this, and the other was a bit about herself.

Her feedback was important to me even though I don't know her because she was writing from a very personal perspective. That type of feedback, to me, makes my struggling with my writing all worthwhile.

Tis good when you receive costructive crit or someone explains just what they like or dislike about your writing. I have rewritten in the past after reading such.

Most comments unfortunately are not like that but at least they show someones read it!

I agree. I love when people tell me how the story could progress, even if it's one that I decided was done. I keep all the e-mails with their great ideas. It's so better than than the ones that usually read: u r so hot. u made me hard.

What made this so important to me is that the story was about a cancer survivor. As many of you know I work on a cancer unit in a local hospital as well as having a mother who is a cancer survivor. (Do I dare mention the "scare" my wife and I had with a lump in her breast last year?) Because of this I know a little bit about what happens both mentally and physically with a person undergoing treatment. I used this knowledge to write my story, as well as the feedback from a good friend who has also dealt with cancer on a personal level.

The person who wrote to me was also a cancer survivor and used her own experience to point out several things she thought were wrong with my story. The sheer courage it took to write that letter to me is incredible. (If you have never dealt with a cancer survivor and how American society treats them in many cases then you wouldn't understand.) For her to not only take the time to write to me with her views about the story, but to also tell me that she too is a survivor is something that I can only stand in awe of. This is something that to me took incredible courage on her part. How can I not try to change the story?
