For the past several years I have been caring for a certain patient. He and his family have been more than a handfull. Vey demanding and insisting that I only have one patient to care for, their family member.

Last weekend the patient died on my shift. I broke protocol and called the family members and informed them of what had happened. They gathered and collected the patient and had him buried according to their beliefs, within the time frame directed by their beliefs.

This morning the patients daughter showed up on my unit insisting on meeting with me. SHe hugged me, (Not an onerous thing as she is quite the lovely little handfull.) then she thanked me for caring for her father. When I told her that caring for people was the reason I was there she informed me that more people should feel that way. Then she handed me a small package, telling me to put it in my locker and open it at home, before turning to head for my bosses office. I did as she asked. (We're not supposed to accept gifts from patients or family members.)

Later I saw the letter she handed to my boss. (There was a copy in the package she gave me.) In the letter she told my boss as well as the head of the hospital that I was the only person on the staff of my unit that her family trusted because I had never lied to her father. She insisted that the hospital send me and my wife to school for our R.N.'s. (Like that will ever happen.)

When I arrived at home I opened the package and was shocked at what I found. Inside was the same letter she had handed my boss. Under this was a thick chain holding a Star of David. Under this rested a real surprise. Ten one Troy Ounce Ingots of Gold encased in Lucite Blocks. (Marked .999 fine)

Now that's what I call a thank you.

Good for you, Cat.

You deserve it.

I am still in awe of the marvelous care and concern we received. Quality and caring medical personnel are a godsend.

OMG! Each of those three items is an incredibly fine thank you; together, it sounds like a real life moment.

Well done, Cat. Very well done. Once again, it sounds like you're the kind of person there should be more of.

SSS,

If you haven't done so already please send a letter to the hospital. Tell them you are more than happy with the care your husband received. If you can remember names then make sure you mention them.

You wouldn't believe how good that makes people feel.

Usually all people receive are the complaints.

Was there an Aide that went out of their way to make your husband comfortable even though they were being over loaded? Mention them. Was there an R.N. who did the same? Mention them.

Believe me a simple note to the head of the hospital mentioning names means a lot.

That's a good idea, Cat. I'm actually working on a giant letter to the editor and naming many names for the local paper.

I will also send it to the hospital.
