Where I live we're right under the approach pattern for a rather large Airport. (International) The aircraft pass over us at less than 1000 feet. We're so used to it we don't really notice it anymore. (Although at first it was a bit spooky hearing the pilots playing with the throttle settings. You can hear the engines spooling up and down.)

This afternoon I was out on the ladder taking down the Christmas Lights. (No Stella I don't leave them year round.) I could hear a plane in the pattern as it came in from behind me. The engines were spooling up and then, silence.

I almost fell off the ladder spinning around to see what was happening when the engine noises came back, the pilot was spooling down again. (Whew)

The only things I can think are the plane either hit one of those areas where the sound was directed away from where I was, or the local noises combined perfectly to cancel the noise from the engines.

It certainly was spooky though.

If you can figure out how to duplicate the situation, you can quickly retire a multi-millionaire! There are thousands out there who don't want the airplane noise.
