Russia has never exactly been a hotbed of tolerance, and it certainly hasn't gotten better with the fall of the USSR. Among other things, the Russian Orthodox church is quite frankly vile,they are not surprisingly virulently anti gay but also were traditionally and today are prime pushers of anti semitic teaching (I wouldn't be surprised to hear the Russian Orthodox church was pushing as official teaching "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion"). There is nothing open about Russia today, it is basically a gigantic thugocracy, and if you don't fit into some 'normal' mode, you are going to have a rough time there. Course, you will never hear the Russian Orthodox church speaking out about the rampant criminal activity in the country, the vicious murders of rivals in the business world and such, because they are part of it, the church is thriving on donations from the mobsters, so why would they complain?

Put it this way, in terms of wanting to live there, Russia to me is right up there with North Korea and Iran, it is about just a appealing, despite all the claims of a "New Russia". About the only thing new about it is the money flowing in from oil and natural gas and other natural resources, other then that, it is basically the same old brutal crap.
