Notebook Computers

I can't give yu a lot of information on Laptops as I have only had two. The first started out as an Acer 350c. Started out as one because my father found out I was using it only as a word processor and he modified it. By the time he was done we didn't know what it was, but man could it go with Word. It's battery finaly died a grisly death and it would have cost more to replace the battery than it would have to buy a new/used laptop. Our current one is a Dell Latitude running Me. We love it. Even so we are going to be upgrading it soon by adding more RAM as well as a DVD player. (I take it with us when we travel.)

As a side note: Windows ME is one of the most unstable versions of windows available, and also the most RAM demanding.

If you have it available, I would highly suggest to anyone to 'downgrade' to Windows 98 SE (second edition)

I have had several laptops over the past ten years. My last three have been Dells. They are reliable and VERY versitile. Modular drive bays means I can switch between hard drives for work and for home. The CD/DVD/Floppy bay also accepts a second battery or a second hard drive. Their modular drives also fit most models even if your drive is 5 yrs old and you want to use it in a new model. I still use the floppy drive that came with my first Dell Laptop in my new one.

Also Dells support is OUTSTANDING when dealing with different OSs. I know of no other laptop that has the level of driver support for Linux that Dell has. In fact I was turned of of Sony a few years ago because they only offered the latest Windows OS and a BIOS security feature prevented loading any other OS.

Edit: Most laptops also have PS/2 and USB ports to plug in external keyboards and mouse. The eraserhead and touchpadcursor controls can be awkward and slow in some cases. I have a flexible, waterproof, rollup keyboard I use a lot as well as an small optical mouse.
