Hey! I've created a vampire character who hunts for her prey in a club and I'm using her to explore the various genres here on Lit. My first chapter, in the genre of Lesbian sex, went over well, but my second, in Interracial Sex, has gotten so few views and even less votes, I can't get a feel for whether I did it right or not. Please take a look and give me your thoughts. Thanks a lot!

I did look but I can't tell you why either. They are both great stories. Maybe lesbians are into vampires more? It's really hard to say.

Different sets of readers read/vote/comment different category differently. You posted them to different categories. You shouldn't expect equal receptions.

Didn't Expect the Same... But...

I know the categories differ, because the readership differs, but I was still really disappointed to get so little feedback. I enjoy the writing for myself, but there's that little kid inside all of us desperate for approval, and no one is more vocal about their opinions than an online forum, LOL.

Some thoughts:

- Posting different chapters in different categories means people who follow Interracial but not Lesbian wouldn't have seen part 1. I suspect people are less likely to read a story if the first they see of it is part 2 - that means they either have to come in partway through, or navigate back to part 1 in a different section.

- While I don't read a great deal in Interracial, I get the impression that a lot of the readers there have a fetish for the social taboo aspects of interracial sex and really want those aspects played up (lots of "big black guy, virginal white girl" sort of stuff). Skimming your part 2, you mention a few times that the guy is black but you don't really make a big thing of it, and the vampire angle with woman in control might not match the vibe that those readers are expecting.

- Neither of the chapters really did it for me (personal preferences - I like my smut a bit more drawn-out) but skimming both of them together, I thought they were fairly similar in style and quality. I think the difference in reception is more to do with the factors mentioned above than with any specific quality problem with chapter 2.

Well, it did it for me.
I'm always thought the vampire scene from Buffy the vampire layer to True Blood to Twilight was way overrated.
But the short descriptive sex was hot.

The bad:
Your characters are flat, no plot, no dialog, little conflict, some telling instead of showing. If I'd had to read 2 of these in a row I'd be bored.

Sadly you need to get used to lack of response. There are categories that do much better than others, but in general there are very few votes per views and even fewer comments.

Most readers, read and simply move on. The two seconds it takes to vote are beyond most of them. So you have to just enjoy writing for the sake of writing and go with that.

Besides, I believe in the law of attraction, but with a twist. Indifference and apathy will get you more than worrying and caring. Put it up for yourself and don't give a rats ass what others think.

That's when you end up with a bunch of results, because you;re no longer worried about it.

Thanks Everyone!

They are meant to be independent, but I know what you mean. If a story title interests me and there is a high enough rating, I usually go to the author's site and look for the first chapter, I never jump into the middle of it.

The cultural taboo is probably the big factor, I agree. I was going more for the aesthetics, I rather like the look of the dark on light, but I guess I don't know enough people immersed in the black culture to really "get" the taboo part. I'm not sure I could play it up.

Thanks everyone for their input!

On a Side Note...

Do you think if I posted them with sub titles, like "Laila and the Glass Armonica: The Blonde" and "Laila and the Glass Armonica: Dark Chocolate," it might facilitate easier reading with the bouncing categories?

A couple more thoughts:

- If each of the stories are intended to stand alone, you might consider leaving off the numbering and just use a common element in the titles to indicate the relationship. They won't then get the "other parts in this series" links, but anybody who looks at your profile can figure out that they're related. Something like this:

Sex Goddess: Bimbos of the Death Sun
Sex Goddess: When Justin Met Kelly
etc

- Select category according to the focus of the story. If the vampire element is more prominent than the interracial aspect, it will probably work better in Sci-Fi/Fantasy (or maybe just Erotic Couplings) than Interracial. If you just want to use the skin colour as a visual element, you're not obliged to put it in a category where people are expecting that to be the big fetish of the story.

The Works are Re-Named, TY!

So I re-named the stories to keep them together yet not as chapters. I hope it helps. On a side note.... I only have 19 votes on the Ebony story, so anyone here who'd like to read it and then give me a boost.... :D. Of course, I would ask that if you don't think the story deserves a 5, please don't vote. It has worked it's way up to a 4.00 even, so anything less than a 5 will either hurt or not help at all.

I've also got some really wild Incest stories that aren't doing well because of HATERS. I've apparently destroyed a few childhoods since it's a Cinderella Story. ROFL. If you're into that thing, I'd love to hear comments, more than votes, the haters all seem to think it should be categorized as BDSM or non-consent, but I thought incest trumped it all, being the most "shocking" of the taboo list, IMO. I didn't think it was very BDSM at all except one scene, and that was really more of a gang bang anyhow.

THANKS!

LaSalia,
I read a lot in the Incest category and I agree with your commenters who say it is miscategorized. It is most definitely BDSM. The step-family issue does not trump the torture, humiliation, control, rape etc.
Also, I don't think it's the Cinderella issue, I really think it's that this kind of story is not what incest readers want.

I agree. Incest readers want light and fluffy sex. it's all about the taboo.

I have several "fun" mother son stories that get tons of votes and comments.

I did a long running brother sister story that involved BDSM and some pretty bleak things like drug addiction and it did not get a lot of attention.

Lasalia,

I tried to read your incest story.

Your bad reaction is because for lack of a better word it's appalling.

This is not bdsm it is sheer torture/rape/ and sexual sadism. It is far to harsh to be enjoyable and I'm usually all for rough sex, but there has to be some fun or consent at some point.

Take the step out and stick it where it belongs; in the non consent section. I'm actually surprised it has not been reported.

If you want a better response to this post it on the site Asstr they'll eat it up there.

They are meant to be independent....

Just curious. You state you created 'a' character and were going cross genre. Not a worry, but why keep them independent stories. The primary, after what, hundreds of years of being a vampire... is likely to have vastly diverse sexual appetites. Look in your first and second stories and see if you can find a common threat, like the guilt the vampire feels or whatever.

Sticking with a single title makes it easy on readers to figure out they've found part 2 and need to move back. The common thread gives them an anchor to hang onto.
