I'm going to anyway.

In the news this evening was a blurb about the feminists bitching about government male bosses not taking female underlings on trips to conferences etc. Their beef, which is legitimate, is that these networking conferences are important for their career advancement.

On the other hand, and there always is another side of the story, some senior government officials were questioned regarding the complaint and they openly agreed that that was the case. Their side of the story is that they are not going to set themselves up for any allegation of impropriety or sexual misconduct. And in today's climate that is also a legitimate stance.

So what is the resolution? Every female on travel be accompanied by a chaperone at the taxpayers expense? All males on travel be accompanied by a chaperone? The government form a new Dept. of Personal conduct agents to monitor all individuals on government travel?

Got an idea?

How about men not proposition their coworkers on trips? It's just crazy enough to work!

This problem is making it sound like men only have restraint when they have babysitters. For the guys this is true for, they should be sorted out anyway.

So the basic premise here is that these women will likely falsely accuse men of sexual harrassment - is that correct?

How about we fire the assholes who think their female co-workers are there for their sexual pleasure?

Easy.

I go on conferences often with female co-workers, and "underlings". Bottom line, you don't fuck your boss or your employee. We take that shit seriously.

I don't see what the big deal is.

As a government manager in the past, I had several such cases land in my lap (including one in the reverse--which was the easiest to handle, because a male was accusing his female boss of not recommending his promotion unless he slept with her--and I already had her recommendation to promote him in hand. Bet you can guess what happened to him.)

But, yes, because society has become so quick to believe it, people are taking advantage of it.

Since this was specified government, it's easier to asses than if it were private industry. Who would be sent to the conference--and how many--should be based on who was needed there by their job responsibilities. Budgets shouldn't allow sending someone just because they would benefit from the networking. I'd send who had to go and work out any problems later. (It would be easy for some to say send only a female employee with a female boss or male/male, but I'd had those cases drop in my lap too. :D)

That's it exactly.

It can happen both ways. I remember one particularly uncomfortable moment when a woman co-worker came and plonked down on my lap, started rubbing my chest and telling me how "pimp" I looked, which I thought was odd considering I was wearing a t-shirt and leather jacket.

I politely excused myself to use the restroom, because I had no idea what to do. That may seem weird considering how much I flirt on here, but I'm married. Look but don't touch.

The guys that work for me are all A type sales guys. Great at their job but I get the point. I wouldn't trust a single one not to get drunk and suggest something inappropriate. On the flip side the women that work for me are all smart enough to put said assholes in their place so I don't worry much....

But I can see where some women could be penalized becuase men are stupid. It has always been so...

Sweetie, you have no idea what DC, and by extension what working for the government is like, for either sex. Even if neither engage in any act of impropriety an outside observer with ill intent can make allegations, start rumors, and destroy both careers. That is the nature of the culture of our nations capital and government employees.

Yes, your idea is not without merit. But are you asserting that women are all pure of heart, intent, and without guile when it comes to career advancement? It IS a two way street we're on.

This problem is pernicious and is not restricted to a one sided view of mixed gender relationships. It still takes two to tango. And women have hormones too and are driven by such as well as ambition.

There is no guilty party here, nor those of innocence.

Where or where has our sensitivity to such relationships taking us to?

There is also using basic sense:
Not getting drunk/drinking on business trips,
Refusing to be alone with member of the opposite gender, especially anywhere that is not a public place
Avoiding any conversations/dialogue with members of the opposite gender that are not specific to work,
And realizing that any "social functions" on business trips are still work functions.

Yes, it is difficult to avoid any and all hints of any sort of impropriety, but that's part of the job.
In the end, it's just like learning any skill, repeated and constant practice makes it second nature.

It certainly does sound like the women in your life are smarter than you are to make you see it this way. :D

They've got you buffaloed and conditioned.

All of which led us to smuggling Ralph's dead body back from Bimini. Fucking salesmen.

Gender neutral I presume.

That was just wishful thinking on my part. Common sense and common decency aren't always available; I get that.

Unless one is hired for his/her gender qualities, a professional should and will conduct him/herself in a gender neutral manner.
Work is for work.
Socialize and get laid on your own time in places devoted to socializing and getting laid.

A simple 'Yes' or 'No' would have sufficed.

Ishmael

And there are NO female management who could go on these trips with female underlings?

Not in the context of avoiding any appearance of impropriety, particularly as the phrase, "Gender neutral, I presume?" is ambiguous when given on it's own in the form of a question.

Jesus, how fucking 'intellectual' do you think you are? It was a 'yes' of 'no' question. Or are you one one of those that think that "is" has many meanings?

Ahem!

Some of you "Ladies" can be quite aggressive and forward... and revengeful if you get Pissed off or don't get your way.

Men do NOT get an even hearing in these matters.

Seriously?
You're asking why I didn't answer an ambiguous question question here on the GB with a simple yes or no?
That's kinda like asking someone why they paused to to put on an anti-shark suit before diving into the shark tank.
