While mentally preparing for a rather large change of venue, walking and smoking and drinking and thinking, I had some thoughts that may be useful to some...
For the past three years I have been available for child care every few weeks for children of a military family in North Carolina, at Cherry Point MCAS, Marine Corps Air Station, my son in law works maintaining F-18 fighter aircraft.
He is about to be deployed to Iraq and was transferred to Miramar MCAS (I think) near San Diego, California for preparation and further intense training. It has, as you may suspect, created stress within the family and the extended family, which is why I am here.
While the Pragmatists, such as Pure, will not appreciate my observations, as they are personal, subjective and not the least bit scientific, Colly, would have appreciated my observations...
I walk two children to school each weekday, along with a two year old toddler and I observe, as I go, that there are many more blacks, hispanics and asians, then there are caucasians; curious, thought I.
So I did a mental math count and came up with about an eight to two, ratio of racial differiation.
It is not just Marines here at Mirimar, but Sailors too, as the Navy and the Marines are somewhat joined together, many causcasian Sailors have Asian wives and children.
Further...these kids...and they are kids, in their 20's, are young and vital, they drive Mustangs and Corvettes and Monte Carlo's (Nascar style), they have boats and jet ski's and 64 inch plasma TV screens...and they make babies by the bunches.
For the first time in my life I saw a four baby, baby carriage, strolling down the sidewalk on the way to school, fully loaded, with mixed race children all happily burbling away with each other.
While the military is burgeoning because of war, it still remains a small percentage of the population...however...and I draw no conclusions in this post, consider these several millions of young men and women and their offspring, honored, rewarded and living the 'good life', as every credit card purveyor and new car dealer knows the 'military' will pay...offers all the amentiies of life to these young warriors and their spouses and offspring.
The hated 'SUV's abound in this military complex of housing that I have witnessed for several weeks, of every size and shape and model and make...almost unreal in view of the high price of gasoline, (petrol) for you aliens.
I suspect that few have the opportunity that I have had to observe such things and I thought perhaps it might be informative for you. I draw few conclusions, make no political or socioogical imperatives, just observe and catalogue for further consideration.
But since I did think of it and consider it, I seem compelled to share the thoughts, for what it might be worth. At 'free' the price is right...
