British Company Makes DVD for Parrots

LONDON (AP) -- No more bored birds. No more annoyed avians. A British company on Friday introduced "Pollyvision,'' an 80-minute DVD of wild parrots preening, feeding and flying through the rainforest. The World Parrot Trust hopes will entertain caged parrots and budgies while their owners are out at work.

The Trust, based in Hayle, southwest England, said it believes the work is the first to be aimed at an avian audience. It has been launched as part of celebrations for World Parrot Day on May 31.

Film producer Jamie Gilardi, a Californian parrot biologist, believes the DVD could improve the lives of Britain's 5 million pet parrots and budgies.

"Parrots are highly intelligent, sensitive and social creatures, so they need a great deal of enrichment and stimulation or they get bored and depressed,'' he said. The film has been edited to appeal to parrots' interests and attention span.

Alison Hales, one of the directors of the Paradise Park Wildlife Sanctuary in Hayle, said the DVD also gave insight into the "secret life of parrots.'' But she added, "We have yet to see whether all parrots will respond to it, or whether some will be frightened.''

I don't care what you say, 'Ditas, the bird is dead. I want a refund.

Refund? On the bird or the DVD? Sorry, no returns whatsoever. Deal with it.

pythonly yours, Perdita :p

<.....wonders if perhaps he shouldn't have tried fitting the DVD in the bird...>

They have 'em for cats, too!

My sister bought Video Catnip for us a few years ago.

It's the same sort of thing, lots of footage of birds flying and chirping, squirrels scampering, etc.

Our kitties were mildly intrigued (and one kept looking behind the TV) but for the most part it didn't hold their interest for long.

And our adopted farm cat (the only practiced hunter in the bunch - we've seen him take down birds in flight) actually perked up at the sound, at least at first. Once he sniffed the air, however, he walked disgustedly away.

Maybe it works better for birds?

Well, it is true that 'only parrots' get bored and upset when left without company.

However, I would prefer a DVD with loud cat hisses or gun shots to play at 5:30 in the morning, when it seems that every pidgeon, sparrow, goose and seagull on the planet seems to perch outside my bedroom window singing their irritable squaks and whistles louder than Karaoke Boy in the apartment below me. And I'm sure, just to irritate the hell out of me this morning, they were doing it to the tune of 'Do you think I'm sexy'.

i am so with you on that one Charley. the seagulls here are anything but restful when i want to sleep.

so, i wonder if the video of the virtual fireplace i have was meant to keep me amused . do you think you should actually have a parrot to own one of those dvds?.. do you think its filled with subliminal msgs? hrm..

Entertainment for parrots.

Thousands of children dying every day, and what do we come up with? Entertaining DVD's for parrots.

Dear SSS,
My cat's video has birds, butterflies, mice, bees, etc. Senor Alec Thompson is entranced by the thing. He's seen it a hundred times, but he sits attentively in front of the TV through the entire thing. Occasionally reaches up and paws the screen when the squirrels come on. Whenever I haven't played it for him for a few days, he sits in front of the set, stares at me, and waits patiently until I run his video.
Cattishly,
MG

Senor Thompson sounds delightful!

But I wonder . . .

Does he run the video for himself when you're gone? Steal your credit card and order out for tuna fish pizza and beer? Invite all his kitty friends over to watch it like some strange cat porno flick?

(Mine sure would.)

So, let me get this right, you stick a bird in a cage and then show it films of lots of other birds having fun? Nice.

Where's Pop when there's a parrot thread up?

When he saw what a balls-up I made of it he's probably trying to get his animal out of the DVD player.

If you have a mouser, try a porno flick for entertainment. Lucy was my mouser and if you poped a flick in and left it running she would stay there entranced, Jumping up and pawing the screen for almost every action close up :)

The late Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan enjoys watching "Animal Planet." She's so cute, snuggling with her stuffed rabbit, or holding Squeaky President Bush Head between her front paws. Programs about wolves are of particular interest to the late Senator, particularly when they howl. Squeaky President Bush Head only watches when she happens to hold him so he's facing the TV.

Without knowing it, you could actually be training a conditioned reflex into Lucy.

For your future safety, I would advise ejecting her from whatever room you and your partner choose to make out in. I realize this reduces much of the spontaneity, but you have only yourself to blame.

Another remedy would be to have her declawed. Is Lucy a biter?

Exactly.

I had two lovebirds until Senator Moynihan accidentally broke them. But I regretted buying birds as soon as I saw how much fun they had flying around the house and how they hated going back to the cage. At least they had each other and a chance to fly for a few minutes every day.

Until the incident.

Dear Maths,

I was glad to hear you speak of the Senor. I wondered if he was still around (you know, not dead).

relievedly, Perdita

Dear Perdita,
Oh, yes. The Senor is still very much around and is the terror of the neighborhood. He's only five years old.

Ps. I'm working my way through all those Terry Pratchett novels I bought. Yesterday I read the one that started the whole garderobe thing here on the AH. I well remember reading that book for the first time and not knowing what a garderobe was. Then I asked for information here, Og replied, and suddenly it was garderobe city at the AH. Seems like forever, but I've only been coming here for less than two years. I'm sure people who read my posts feel it's been more like twenty.

Pps. In the old Monty Python tapes my dad has, they make reference to the "late Generalissimo Francisco Franco" being still dead. I wonder if he and the late Senator Daniel Patrick Monyihan know each other in the great beyond.
