I worked on the bike for most of the day today. When I had it back together I fired it up and for once it seemed to be running correctly. All four pipes were heating up and there was no backfiring. By this time it was 1745.

When I went inside to get washed up my wife asked me what I thought, was the bike running? I shurgged and told her it seemed like it but I couldn't be sure until I had put a few miles on it then had the Carbs Synched. She then reminded me that we were going out to dinner tonight.

I grumbled as I took a shower. What I wanted was a beer but if I was going to be driving there would be none for me. AS I'm brushing out my hair after the shower my wife comes into the bathroom and starts to braid my hair while aasking me if I thought the bike would run us to the restaraunt and back. I thought about it for a minute as she finished up then shrugged and told her we wouldn't know unless we tried it. She grinned and started pulling our gear out of the back room. By 1810 we were stepping out the door wearing our leathers and carrying our helmets.

I rolled the bike out from under the overhang and fired it up. It was sounding just fine so I motioned for my wife to climb aboard. Off we went as the skies started to grow dark. We weren't going very far, maybe ten miles north to a BBQ Place we had a gift card for.

As we were coming up on the halfway point heading north I saw flashing lights up ahead of us. At first I couldn't tell just what they were but as we came closer I could see there were several cruisers as well as a couple of rescue vehicles. They all seemed to be on the right hand side of the road. I moved to the left lane and slowed with traffic while watching for people cutting me off. AS we came up on the scene I could see a Fire Engine parked cross wise blocking two lanes while a cruiser was sitting upright in a ditch. When I came even with the engine traffic stopped for a light up ahead. I could see what was going on behind the engine and I didn't like it.

There was a pickup stopped in the traffic lane with a crew cutting away the top of the cab to get to someone inside. Several yards ahead of the truck was another rescue crew treating someone in the roadway. Buried in the back end of the truck was a sport bike, all I could see was the rear wheel and part of the swingarm.

Sitting there waiting for the light I looked over the scene and noticed a couple of other things. There were no skid marks behind either the bike or the truck. Also not too far up the road was a group of people sitting on their Sport Bikes on the side of the road talking with a cop. Looking closer at them I recognised several of them as being stunters from the area. Seeing this and the accident scene it didn't take a lot of imagination for me to see what had happened.

When the light changed I rolled on the throttle and we headed on our way to dinner. As we passed the group of riders one of them waved halfheartedly and I waved back. When we arrived at the restaraunt we parked the bike and my wife asked me what I thought had happened. It was obvious that the scene had bothered her. I told her that from the looks of the accident scene Darwinism had rasied it's head once more. This damned fool had been racing when he came up on the truck stopped at the traffic light and wasn't able to either avoid it or stop before hitting it at a high rate of speed.

Well she looked at me for a minute before nodding then taking off her helmet and heading inside. We shed our leathers and took our seats and enjoyed a wonderful dinner of Short Ribs and thinly sliced smoked Pork. We took our time and enjoyed this rare dinner out. After finishing it with a nice cup of strong coffee we paid and headed back out to the bike.

Rolling towards home we were on a main road and I was keeping it right at the speed limit while listening to the bike for anything indicating it wasn't working right. (It sounded good to me.) I was also keeping my eyes open and moving as it was dark and traffic was fairly heavy. We had just crested a small hill and were heading down the backside when I heard the snarling of bikes coming fast. In my mirros I could see more than several lights coming up fast. I couldn't believe it when I saw these idiots come screaming past us like we were sitting still. I again recognised several of them, they were the same group as before.

By the time we arrived at home I was still shaking my head at these idiots. Not only had these idiots caused one accident today but they were racing in the dark down a heavily trafficed main road. I was honestly surprised that we didn't see more accidents on the road after they passed us.

Cat

I'm real sorry, Cat. Yes, I have to say that that sounds an awful lot like evolution in action, but it's still unpleasant.
