https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/images/emoji.php/v9/tf0/2/16/1f328.pngSurprise! It snowed in Alaska!https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/images/emoji.php/v9/tf0/2/16/1f328.png
It happens every year folks. The hard, fluffy, water falls from the sky and some vehicle operators on the road have trouble with the transition. Here are some quick refresher points:
https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/images/emoji.php/v9/taf/2/16/2744.png Leave more distance between you and the vehicle in front of you. It is slickery and there's a good chance that the person in front of you may have also forgotten that braking before their turn should be done sooner than before (see next tip). Don't cause the next 5-car fender bender on Bogard please. Along with this, don't cut into someone's safe stopping distance in traffic. It's a super great way to end up with a bent bumper and the entire commuting population of south central cursing your name.
https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/images/emoji.php/v9/taf/2/16/2744.png Slow down. You don't have the same stopping distance you did yesterday. If you are approaching the intersection at 50 and try to brake the same distance away that you usually do when the light turns yellow, you're going to have a bad time. Same goes for stop signs and roundabouts. This is not "full send" weather.
https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/images/emoji.php/v9/taf/2/16/2744.png Turn on your headlights. Not only is it helpful for other drivers who are kicking up snow and may not see your silver(ish) vehicle as they try to make a turn, it's also so people can see your taillights through the fluff. Plus, sunrise is at 9:40 and sunset is at 5:40. Most of you commute to work and back in the dark now. You should have your lights on a half hour before sunset and a half hour after sunrise (13 AAC 04.010). Turn them on.
https://static.xx.fbcdn.net/images/emoji.php/v9/taf/2/16/2744.png Be kind. This might be a teenagers first real winter driving experience without their adult in the passenger seat, it could be a recently moved military family who didn't have a choice to move to Alaska in winter and are doing their best, it could be a brand new mom with a tiny human in the back seat. Just be kind. You never know the circumstances of the vehicle operators around you who are making you rage out behind the wheel. It's not worth the energy, honestly. Just take a deep breath and remember that we are all in this together, and no one is born a perfect driver.
Stay cool, only 7 months 'till spring

A couple grizzlies just came up the driveway and made tracks in the snow across the yard.

Merrill Field ATC. The main RW is east-west, parallel to the road. Photo is with a telephoto that makes the mountains look a bit closer than they really are. On the left side of the photo, count the light poles (not arms) in from the left. At 4, go to the top of the pole and then slight up a bit more to the thin spot in the alders. 32 years ago, I carried half of a big fucking moose up and over the pass that's out of the frame on the left. There were two of us and we each made 3 loaded trips up the south side and two loaded trips down the north side of the pass.
