In Hot Arctic, snowmobiles last one year because they are built as sporty toys, not daily drivers and workhorses. That book is 42 years old. Are there durable snowmobiles now? What are their lifespans and costs?

Mine are 28 years old and they run just fine.

I remember talking to the elected leader of the village of Ekwok in the summer of 1978, before Dyson's book came out. He said, "When the machines got good enough, I shot all my dogs." This might be alarming to doggie lovers, but it takes a lot of work to feed and maintain a team of working dogs.
