At the pond
"From a hundred yards I could not see clearly, but the tugs at my heart and soul gave me the confidence to follow in the footsteps of those who know. On the bench sat a mother putting skates on a child, perhaps. I do know these people, but I think I know them well. From a distance I saw three hovering over a hole in the ice as kids zoomed by chasing a puck. A younger person, perhaps a grandson, carried a bucket full of fresh caught, I thought. When they walked beyond the fishing hole, the players showed their respect and gave her distance. Without a glance, her cane touched the ice and she walked confidently as if she was on the Kuskokwim or Norton Sound. Perhaps it was a granddaughter who followed, maybe so. As she walked slowly up the hill where the boy had parked the car, it was as if before when she had followed in knowing traditions and cultures creates respect for others to know where to step. May the ice remain thick to hold generations who will walk with canes."
