I'm not sure about the exact details of this case, but North Korea has sentenced an American tourist to 15 years in prison/hard labor for "subversion".

North Korea frequently accuses outside visitors and tourists of being spies and detains/interrogates them.

I hope this guy enjoys being starved, beaten, and routinely tortured on a daily basis in one of North Korea's countless labor camps.

Also, I don't believe that they have any kind of appeals or parole system in NK so this guy will likely be forced to serve the entirety of his 15 year sentence.

I see their logic really.
Who the hell would go to that toilet of a country if they weren't a spy?

What exactly did he do to be accused of being a spy and trying to subvert the state?

Wow!

You can buy North Korean flags as well as the flag of any country in the world online and at stores.

It was a propaganda banner in the hotel; a souvenir almost anywhere in the world short of North Korea, or Cuba, or San Francisco...,

You didn't read the article you linked to did you?
If you had you wouldn't have asked, the believed incorrect information given by a lit poster.

This is what happens in the deadliest game of Capture the Flag in then history of the world. Seriously, that's how it goes - you try to capture the enemy's flag, you go to jail. This jail just happens to be exceptionally shitty.

He knew it was a crime going into it as well, as did the church that sent him.
I doubt he thought North Korea would give him a slap on the wrist and send him home either.
He's basically just proved to the whole world how much of an idiot he is.

I've read about tourism in N. Korea before. It's very tough and doesn't seem all that much fun. Outside of your hotel you are not allowed anywhere without an escort and pictures are very strictly controlled. Going off on your own can actually get you shot. Taking unauthorized pics gets you dropped into whatever kind of hole they call a prison. Pretty much doing anything they don't explicitly say you can do will get you killed or imprisoned.
Not much of a vacation if you ask me but people still do it.

How you know someone is insane....they try to group North Korea in with San Francisco.

He knew where he was going and what he was going to be in for, but thought being a white male american would protect him.

Also if people think it's worth the risk of getting shot they should remember that fearless leader killed one of his with an anti-aircraft gun. I see no need to visit a country where that is ever on the table. The old fashioned blowing from a gun would probably be better and that was pretty fucking brutal.

Idiot is right. Namely for going to North Korea in the first place. Then thinking he could mess around with them and they'd let that go. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

I'm sure this will do wonders for the North Korean tourism industry.

"Visit North Korea for a weekend, stay for 15 years of hard labor"

Actually to be fair though I read a little about this and it seems that these posters are considered a really important thing in North Korea. They aren't just decorations like we view them in the rest of the world. They are basically sacred items, oddly enough. Many North Koreans don't think the outside world should see them, its a special thing to them. They have jailed foreigners before for trying to take them out of the country. I don't understand it myself, just saying cultural values can honestly differ.

Why would you fucking bring race into it. You liberals are fucking sick. He was a 21 year old college kid who did something stupid. Its got nothing to do with race.

What I read, stated that it was ploy for the united states to lift bans or sanctions on North Korea.
Granted he should not have gone there and shouldn't have tried taking the flag. I sum that up as a stupid kid.
Now it will become a political issues.

Its kinda like cutting your finger off on the table saw...you sit there thinking...if only I could undo this somehow...I knew I shouldn't have done that..but dammitt..I can't...but you can't think about anything else...fuck!!

Hell of price for fame, assuming when he gets out, and back, there is a book, tv and some opportunity to profit. If he doesn't capitalize in the end he's really fucking stupid.
