Is there anyone here that has used or known someone that has used Norplant? I'm pregnant, due in 9 weeks, and want a long term birth control. My husband and I have agreed that we only want two children (we already have a 2 1/2 year old son). I've thought about getting my tubes tied, but have read the horror story threads on here about that, so I'm thinking this isn't an option I'd like right now. I've read up on the Norplant, but would like to know if anyone here has any personal experience with it.

There are "horror stories" involved with just about any medical procedure or treatment.

It all boils down to competence when it comes to medical procedures. My wife had her tubes tied, and had no complications. Then she got a partial hysterectomy, and no complications from that either.

Norplant, as well as other methods of hormonal birth control can cause complications down the line. Some forms of hormonal birth control have been linked to ovarian cancer....just linked, maybe not the actual cause. Some women have very irregular menstruation due to hormonal birth control.

Norplant may be the way to go in case you change your mind about having more kids, but if you seriously don't want more kids, then have your tubes tied right after delivery. Then you won't have to deal with the issues of Norplant. Of course, talk this over with a medical doctor first, I'm just an average guy. But if you have a doctor that you feel is competent, then it shouldn't be an issue to get a tubal ligation. :)

Thanks for your reply. I've read that Norplant may actually help prevent ovarian cancer, along with other "woman problems." One of my biggest concerns was having irregular menstral periods, I've always been regular, and would hate to have it just start whenever it feels like it.

I am really, really, seriously unconvinced that loading your body up with massive amounts of synthetic hormones could possibly be a good thing. No way I would do it, personally.

I'm with MountainMan on this one. A vasectomy is an incredibly simple low risk procedure, esp compared to TL.

one word....

Vasectomy

We have discussed this option also. Not to be too personal, but have you had this done? And if so, what was the cost, pain factor, ect.? I haven't done too much research on vasectomies...I think I'll go do that now. Thanks. :)

We opted for vasectomy as well!

I'm married to a real whimp when it comes to surgery, needles, etc. - but after discussing it we decided it was the way to go for us - I had to birth two kids, he could go through this procedure. It also kept me from going through more years of birth control pills - since my doctor wouldn't tie my tubes as I was only 28 when our 2nd one was born.

Do the research and you'll see. It's not that difficult of a procedure (especially for us women - hehe!)

Hello..... I can help your situation. My wife had Norplant for 4 years. It worked like a charm. She never got pregnant. If you can handle the procedure of having it put in, then you'll be fine. They use a local numbing agent and insert the 5 little sticks into your arm. Then they stitch it up and your done in like an hour. You'll always be able to feel the little tubes in your arm. They don't hurt as I always ask my wife. The procedure having them taken out was a little more of a task. There are side effects.... but my wife never had any. Go for it if you think you might want more kids. But if your done, your husband should get clipped. It's safer for you and more healthy for him. JMO:D ;)

I dated someone that had it. Have no idea of the long term affects but something like that I would certainly do some long term research before deciding. Best of luck on your pregnancy and with your new child.

I haven't had it done ..yet...am seriously considering it. I've had 2 kids and my wife and i don't want anymore.

It is far safer than having tubes tied...it's an out paitent surgery..I've had a few friends who had it done....It's a bit uncomfortable..but all are glad they did it..

As for cost..I don't know that...I believe that it is covered by most insurance.

VASECTOMY.........

Had it done,,,,no big deal at all...
Had a good Doc though....He did the proceedure at 2:30 in the afternoon...I was coaching little league baseball at 5:30.......
Never had any swelling...only a slight discoloration,,,(bruise) for a few days...I have recommended this option to anybody that asks...

There was no difference in sex drive ,,,ejaculation or anything

As far as I am concerned,,,this is the best form of birth control

I hate having to take a pill everyday...I won't even take tylenol if I've got a headache, so I know I don't want the pill. And if your doctor wouldn't tie your tubes at 28, I'm pretty sure I couldn't get mine tied. I'm only 20, but this is my third pregnancy (my last I miscarried). I told him if he had it done, he could take a couple days, and just sit around with a six pack between his legs. :)

Yes, I had a vasectomy. When our 4th child was born, my wife and I wanted to be very, very sure that we would have no more kids. We have an open marriage, so neither of us wanted a chance to create kids by accident.

Anyways, the procedure was surprisingly quick, and I myself had no complications. A Valium 30 minutes before the procedure, and one immediately before starting helps a lot. The only discomfort that I felt was the initial needle sticks when the doctor was applying local anesthetic. She did one side, applied stitches, did the other side, applied stitches, and was done. I glanced at the clock....30 minutes total.

A day of rest on the couch with an ice pack, and I was good to go. I had none of the "kicked in the groin" feelings that some people complained about...and had no serious swelling.

Vas is definitely a decent way to go if you can.

The procedure was free for me since my wife is military. So as to the cost, I'm really not sure. But since it's a quick outpatient procedure, it can't be too much. $500 seems to be more than reasonable.

Thanks, I'm glad it went well for you. I hope it goes as well for him if this is the option we choose. :)

Hmmm...you all are beginning to convince me this is the way to go.....think I'll make him read this thread when he gets home.

I've had the exact opposite experience. I've had the norplant for going on 5 years, (time to figure out if I'm going to replace it or switch to something else) and have loved it.

My ex-future-sis-in-law had Norplant.. one of the little tubes burst in her arm and leaked the contents into her system.. it really messed her up. The doctor went to remove the whole thing and one of the tubes burst while outside of the body, splattered on her arm and left chemical burn scars.

I had Depo Provera, I loved it for 2 years, no period. 3rd year, I had a period pretty much 365 days out of the year. It depletes your estrogen and can mess your hormones up. I've heard more bad stories than good.

Recently tried the patch, it worked, but I didn't like wearing a huge bandaid on my ass all month.

Now I'm on Lunelle, it's a once a month shot. It is the same medication as the BC pill, just in shot form. I love this method because I get the estrogen levels that I need, with the convenience of only taking it once a month (I'm horrible with pills).

:)
