I’ve been using this sugar cookie recipe for over 20 years, with frosting-painted faces, and a kitchen countertop covered in flour, various bowls of colored frosting, and holiday sprinkles, will always be associated with this confectioners-sugar-instead-of-granulated-sugar cookie dough recipe. Enjoy!
1 cup real butter
1 ½ cups confectioners powdered sugar
1 egg
1 ½ tsp. vanilla
2 ½ cups flour
1 tsp. baking soda
Optional:
½ tsp. almond flavoring
1 tsp. cream of tartar
Preheat oven to 375. Mix all ingredients. Roll out on lightly floured surface to about ¼ – ½ inch thick. Lightly flour cookie cutters and cut dough into holiday shapes with cookie cutters. Place each cut-out on un-greased cookie sheet (AirBake ones are best). If sugar topping is desired, mix granulated sugar (see below) with desired food coloring in separate cereal-sized bowls. Pour small amount of milk into another cereal bowl, dip finger in milk and rub on top of cookies. Sprinkle colored or white sugar on milky surfaces. Bake 7-8 minutes. For icing-topped cookies, bake cut-out shapes plain (without milk/sugar) and spread icing on warm cookies after baking.
Cookie Icing:
1 ½ cups confectioners powdered sugar
3 Tbsp. butter
1 tsp. vanilla
1 Tbsp. milk
Food coloring
Optional:
sprinkles for topping
granulated sugar for topping
milk for coating cookies with sugar
Mix first 4 ingredients. Divide icing into several small cereal bowls and add food coloring to each for desired colors/shades. Spread on warm cookies to make Santas, candy canes, stars, etc. Add sprinkles on top of icing if desired.
