Ok, I'm pretty sure there was a conversation on this before, but i can't find it because I don't remember what it was called. Anyway, I might be able to afford a nook or kindle this summer, and I was wondering if you have one and which you prefer and why.

And yes, there are reviews online, but they are REALLY over thinking this issue. I don't want to read a three page article on which is better. Wow.

I loved my first Kindle...until I accidentally stepped on it and broke it. :(

My second Kindle isn't bad, but they've made "improvements" to the design of the newest basic Kindle that I don't like. My first one had a keypad at the bottom of it, and my second one doesn't. You have to push a button to make the the keyboard pop up on the screen and then scroll through all the keys using the arrow buttons because it's not a touch screen. Doesn't sound so bad until you do it 900 times, and then you want to throw it out the nearest window.

So if you don't want THAT pain in the ass, then I suggest the Kindle Fire, which I don't have personal experience with, but I'm sure that it's not nearly as annoying when typing shit out.

No idea about the Nook, though.

I personally have a kindle fire. I bought my mother the Ipad. and I used to have the kobo. if you want an e reader I personally like the kindle fire, the size is perfect not to bulky not too heavy specially if you choose to read at night. Also what I like about my kindle fire is; when I have time to read is 3 am or so while in bed. I do like having the lights off and being able to read a couple of chapters before falling asleep.

bottom line, Kindle fire is a good investment

I have a Nook Tablet and my little girl (8) has a Nook Color and we love them.

I have a thread on the Nook/Kindle it would be in my profile.

Best of luck with your choice.:rose:

I think it's up to the people to decide. Make your own choice, folks.

Flip big businees the finger.

Tell 'em with your money exactly what you think of 'em.

Tell me more, please...

(1) Can Amazon Kindle books be read on an iPad?
(2) Can an iPad be read in the dark? (My man hates me reading with the bedside light on while he's trying to get to sleep, but I can't get to sleep usually unless I read. Those clip-on lights are crap and I know that you can't read Kindles in the dark.)

Oh hang on (now I've read the whole thread )

You can read a Kindle Fire with the lights off??

.... oh - and now that I google I see that it's not available in the UK

can Literotica be loaded into the nook or kindle? This would be a great site to read in bed without having to use the laptop.

1) Sure. You can read Kindle books, or books you've bought for the Nook from B&N, by using the Kindle app for iPad (free), or Nook app for iPad (also free).

2) Yep. You can adjust the brightness easily, to a bare glow or a bright beacon.

Costs more than nook or kindle, definitely, but it can also pretty much replace a laptop (unless you use a lot of high-end software to do specific functions), while the other two are Readers on steroids. I almost never use my laptop now, because the iPad does almost everything I used to do there.

If you're JUST going to read books, and nothing else, go with a nook or kindle and save the money.

Yes, in the fire and high end nook. But I'm not impressed with the browsers, or touch sensitivity.

Totally happy with my Kindle Fire. Don't have much experience with the Nook, so I can't comment there. My Kindle works great for reading in the dark, and is a perfect size to tote it around with me in my purse instead of a paper book. I use it for chat and email as well as music and netflix. The only thing I can say I'm not thrilled with is typing on the screen, but that is more that I prefer button keyboards in general... I am starting to get used to it.

Yes, you can browse the web on it, so yes you can Lit in the dark too. :)

I have a Nook Color (Xmas present from Master 2 years ago) and I love it! I can (and often do) read it in the dark. The apps aren't as plentiful as those for an Android phone, but they're very useful. (Evernote runs my life on my Nook, phone and laptop.)

Master has the 2nd gen Kindle reader, which is also nice but just a plain reader and can't be read in the dark. It is, however, a bit smaller and much lighter.

Something we both appreciate is the font sizing. We both need readers and like the up-scaling that's possible. I like the Nook a bit better because it can be rotated to read wider. For some reason I just prefer that. <shrug>

The other thing that I love about my Nook is that it will read PDF files. In my artlife there are various tutorials available for different techniques. I can load them onto the SD card and use them at my workbench for hands-on. Same with videos (though they suck battery quick).

Reminds me, the availability of magazine subscriptions is awesome, too. I LOVE National Geographic on the Nook!

I've taken to loading my knitting patterns to my Nook, as well. It's easy to keep track of where I'm at on charts, and the Nook is a lot more durable than a paper pattern. I also scan patterns/charts from books, now, and save them as my own personal PDF's.

I've gotten a quick look at the Nook tablet, which is selling for the same price as my Color did, originally. It's close to the same size and clearly more versatile. I have a smartphone, though, so I figure I'm very well off with my current gadget level. (I'm a geek, life is good.)

You can use the browser on the basic Kindle for this, too (as long as you have a wireless Internet connection). Not the most convenient way in the world to read things online, but there is a functional browser on it.

I am a bit of a purist and don't consider the Kindle Fire to really be a Kindle. It's not an e-reader, it's a tablet! It can do lots of things besides read books. I prefer my e-reader to only be an e-reader.

Like the Bunny, I accidentally broke my Kindle, mine was a couple of weeks ago. Unlike the Bunny, I got one with a keyboard...my mom told me how horrible the onscreen keyboard was (she got a Kindle because I liked mine) and I knew I didn't want that! So when I broke my Kindle 2, I got the Kindle Keyboard.

I prefer it to not light up. I think they're releasing one with Indiglo, and I think Nook may already have this. But if it lights up, then the light is in your face. That's not good for your sleep patterns at night, if it's in your face like that. I prefer to use a downward pointing light, or my bedside lamp, to read at night.

Also, the Kindle is excellent in bright sunlight. I don't think the Fire is, since it's backlit. I routinely walk around reading (occasionally nearly bumping into people) and I can handle strong sunlight as well as shadows. It's awesome.

Yeah, I love my Kindle!

I too have a Kindle Fire. I actually just bought one for my dad for his fathers day / birthday present. He doesn't have a smart phone, so now he can do all the stuff my mom does on her Droid. He's very happy with it. And I was happy I got in on the group-on and got it for $169 instead of $199. That was exciting.

Anyway. No, the Kindle Fire is not really an e-reader. As stated before, it is more of a tablet.

Nerd moment. I cracked the operating system on mine and loaded the most recent version of Android OS instead. So mine is genuinely more of a tablet. But you don't have to do that to enjoy the Amazon tailored operating system.

Anyway. If you're looking to get more out of your e-reader than just reading, Kindle Fire is the best way to go. You get a lot for your money. The app access is great, it has better graphics, better processor power...

Physically, it also feels more durable than the Nook. I can be a little rough with my electronics, but the Fire has served me well.

NOTE, however. If you do decide on the Fire, I would wait. Just a little bit. Amazon may be releasing other color tablets / e-readers very soon. If they do, the price of the Fire may go down. Or, you may find you can afford the second generation of whatever it is that they release.

My 2 cents.

Thanks y'all. I went with the group consensus and got me a kindle. :nana: I got one with a keyboard, because of the issues I've heard about the touch screens. Thank you!

Yippie. Good choice.

I got one of the second gen Kindles. It still serves me well. I also spend a lot more on books now than I used to spend but the books are also cheaper.

Enjoy.

Don't know anything about Nook, but have had a Kindle for quite awhile now and love it. It goes everywhere with me when I know I may be waiting around, and is on the bedside table other times, just like my book used to be. I prefer it for reading to iPad's etc., which have light up screens as it is easier on the eyes, and can be read anywhere. We bought a cheap clip on light from an online Chinese company which was cheaper than anything available elsewhere, and is easy to use for reading in the dark. I still love the smell and feel of a book if it is extra special, but for convenience, Kindle certainly has the advantage...I can go to the doctors and while waiting decide what I feel like reading and then choose from the huge library I have on the Kindle, not be restricted to whichever book I brought with me.

Yeah, I took it with me to do my errands today, and I slept with it last night. lol

Enjoy, Gracie!

Oh. There's this book someone told me about that you may want to check out for Kindle... It hasn't gotten much press or attention, but it might catch on. Like, Fifty Bales of Hay? Thrifty, Flayed and Gay? Fisting James Earl Ray?

Fuck.

I'll think of it.

I LoL'ed.

I have an iPad ( bought the first, refuse to drop so much money on an upgrade). I use the kindle app often and love it. But, it really depends on where you want to buy your books from. I prefer Amazon, and might have pirated a few books... And all files are easily converted to go on which ever device you choose. If I were voting, I'd go with a kindle.
