my babies are red ear sliders, and they're at breading age now, so I get lots of free turtle porn.

What do you keep your turtles in Fury? Is that a pond? It looks so natural, I wish I could aford to do that for my babies. But they seem happy in their tank for now.

Our's are box turtles. We kept them in an aquarium for a while but the thing wasn't full of water it was mostly dirty and such. They like water but can drown. When it was warm we made them a structure outside that was made from "castle rock" blocks and put some PVC in for drainage.

The "pond" is a cheap clear plastic roller paint brush pan. It's perfect because they can easily climb in and out of the water. They have a sunning rock. A concrete block house (which they like to climb on top of and well as in and out of.) We have planted some natural vegetation they can eat which comes up several times a year and makes things look pretty.

They have a LOT of dirt. This year both of them hibernated! Last year we had to keep putting the younger one back in the aquarium during the cold snaps.

Oh and it also has a large frame with wire mesh on top so they can't climb out and big birds can't grab them.

I take being the "steward" of a animal very seriously. This whole thing, even though we did it ourselves did cost. Just the rock alone did!

A very cool idea! Mine are aquatic, they spend the majority of their time in the water but do have a large rock to cimb on and sit on when they want to dry off. I'm going to get a bigger tank for them soon. I saw a set up at a local place here that will only cost me $300, that's for the tank the stand, hood and lamps, filter the whole bit so that really good. And I can buy the rest piece by piece. I'd love to build them a pond, but right now I live in an apartment and it's on the top floor so it's just not an option right now. but they'll be with me a long while, so eventually we'll all have a happy little place we can fill with plant life and things we like. :cathappy:

Before we bought the house with enough room for a pond (which will will be putting in sometime in the next 2 years before our turtles get too big) Holly was going to make an "outside room" in our apartment. She was going to set it up with UV lamps, get lots of potted plants, and who knows what all else she was going to do - but it included a kiddie wading pool for the turtles. Maybe you could do a setup like that?

I'd love to, and I thought about doing something like that before. The problem is I'm in a tiny one bedroom apartment so there really is no where I could do that. And I'll be here atleast until next feb when the lease is up. The tank I'm getting them is a 50 gallon, it'll hold them for atleast another 2 or 3 years, and if I have to I could seperate them and put two in the 50 and two in the 20. two of them are a lot smaller than the others.

wow! I would have thought it was more than that! I'll have to keep that in mind. I could set something (very) small up on the balcony but it gets really cold here so it would just be a summer thing. The only thing I worry about is that I've read that when they are outdoors they are more likely to get bugs and bad things (my brain just reverted to 3rd grader mode but I think you know what I mean). Maybe I'll skip the dining room and turn it into a turtle playground when I get it cleaned out.

Ours currently all four live in a 55 gal with the newt and two of the crayfish. They like it though. We have a turtle dock for them, as well as rocks for the crayfish (and snails) to hid from them in. They like to dig in the sand that we have in the bottom too. Right now, they are all pretty small. The biggest one isn't even the size of the palm of my hand. When we get the time and money (maybe next summer) we will be putting in a pond and moving them outside at least from late spring to late fall, and probably putting koi in there with them.

My largest one is just a bit bigger than my hand.

How do you like the sand? I've heard it's harder to clean and that makes it so that you have to replace it more often. Right now I have large pebbles in my tank, but I have thought about going to sand, especailly since they started "dancing".

You do have to replace it more often, but if you run your hand just over the top of it when you do partial water changes (to stir up the gunk into the water, which you are scooping out) you don't have to change it that often. And we like the look better than pebbles. Plus it's cheap and if you really want to, you can have just 2 or 3 changes of sand, let it dry out after you take it out, and sift the gunk out. but you can't use a bottom filter or anything like that. We have our filter set into our waterfall setup, so the sand doesn't clog it.

prolly wouldn't work for me then, I have a fluvle. The waterfall filters just weren't powerful enough, I was changing the filter every other day, with the fluvle it's down to once a month and I can wash it out and that makes it last another week or two if I really need to. besides I can't keep the water line high enough to run one, the turtles try to escape *giggles*

Dommy

Named because it moved in , surveyed the apartment, approved , seemed most self assured then slept on my hair the first night as if it had always been there......grrrrr

I like cats . 'Nezumi' the one we had before 'Dommy' I taught to fetch. This cat I decided to teach to read instead. It was a long and painful journey but its kind a reward in itself now I see him out there choosing his own literature ........smiles

( see if I can get a better picture today if he lets me )
