I'm in the middle of what is turning into a reasonable story, but I'm at 4k words without any sex, although I've made hints that there will be some later.

I see the non-erotic category is described as 'Fiction without a sexual focus' which kinda describes my whole life right now :D So should I follow my instinct to post in that section if the sex is only incidental to the story line by my own standards? ie the sex when it happens, will be hot and steamy, but will be right at the end.

I'm sure I could research this myself, but if I start reading loads of other stories now it'll throw my focus. TIA x

You don't provide enough information for someone to answer your question. 4K words isn't that much -- it's just over 1 Lit page, which is very short by Lit standards. There are many hot, sexy, erotic stories at Literotica that take a couple of Lit pages or more before sex happens.

I think a good question for an author in your position to ask is, What is the essence of your story? What is its point? What makes it erotic? If it's erotic, don't post it in non-erotic. If it ends with a sex scene, then it sounds like an erotic story, but you don't say enough about it for anyone else to have an informed opinion.

I haven't researched Non-Erotic myself other than to know that stories there don't get much traffic, but if planning your story for Non-Erotic relieves some of the stress of writing it and helps you get the story done, then I say put it in Non-Erotic.

Write the story you want first. Decide what category to mark it for after it's done. Don't let worry about that get in the way while you're creating the story.

Good advice above.

Write the tale, using as much verbiage as required. If sex is involved, so much the better. Then assign a category.

Oh, and please keep us posted. :)

My suggestion is to finish the story, then worry about category. Who knows what shenanigans your characters will get up to in the end. They'll decide for you. Anyway, 4k? You're just getting started.

You get the ribbon once you get past the finish line, not before - you just need to decide if it's a sprint or a marathon. Or be like Simon, trying to get the whole track team over the line ;).

There are different approaches to writing a story for this site. One is to go out and out for the sex and then try and link them together to make a story. Another way is to write the story and have the sex as an integral part. I favour the latter method and try to write a story that a reader will enjoy not just for the sex. Which would seem to be what you have in mind.

My last story was over 21k words and the sex didn’t appear until the second half of the story. I did say at the beginning of the story there was sex (it was in Romance) but the reader would have to wait for it. It finished in the top 10% of the Summer Lovin’ competition which, in my opinion, shows there are many readers who are looking for good stories and, although they might like reading about it, sex isn’t their only reason for visiting this site.

I would echo what KeithD says. Write the story you want to write and then decide on the category. In fact, I would say to always write the story you want to write.

By the way, if a story stops at 4k, fine--that's longer than most mainstream writing contests will allow in a story. This "longer is better" stuff that floats around Literotica doesn't help you much anywhere but at Literotica.

Thanks guys - that's given me the confidence to put that concern out of my mind. Yup I'm only 4k in, but that's when I started to worry about the pace with regards to the sex.

As always, and I know some of you have been kind enough to tell me before, I should write it for me first and then as you suggest, find the category later.

I just needed a nudge and so your gentle pushes are much appreciated.

(btw I'm waiting for the first part of a series to be approved. I've not written any thing for a few years... it kinda shows doesn't it?!)

Okay, now I'm waiting for the first part of your series to be approved too. I just checked; I've already read everything you've published — so, get busy !

There is nothing wrong with the Non-erotic category. The one story I have there did pretty well. It allows a writer flexibility to try something different on this site. If it does have a steamy sex scene at the end, however, it probably wouldn't go there.

I usually don't like disclaimers, but I sometimes put them in any way. If it turns out to be a long story you have the option of telling the readers that the scene is at the very end. That would be your decision and it depends on what is in the completed story.

10k words and still no sex! I'm enjoying myself though - this will make a cracking short film :D There is sexual static in the air though, which is surely half the fun!

Phew, enough for today. Time to stretch my legs round the GB

My 2c

Hey there.
I made an account just so I could say this:

Don't worry about it.
Sex is sex. It'll happen when and if it should. Don't Mar a good story making it fit into a box. Let it grow, see what happens. See it through.
Then go through and polish it, adjust it, see where it can be enhanced.
Forcing things to happen will ruin a good piece.

I personally prefer a good relationship where things happen naturally. That's good writing.

Who are you writing for? Yourself or an audience?
Both are fine, just know who you should be asking for opinions.

Anyway, best of luck.

AB.

Well your time is much appreciated! TY

Yea... I made the post at a stage where I was starting to fret that I hadn't included any sex, but then I'm pleased to say, everyone replied with much the same response that you have - chill the fuck down, girl!

Since then, the story has rolled along and, as it happens, and at a very appropriate time, there is the most amazing heart-stopping sex!

I'm out of practise and not very experienced. Sometimes we all need a word of encouragement and AH is the place to find it :rose:

Dang, Sticky.

This thread wasn’t about ‘Under Your Skin‘, was it? Maybe you’re writing something else too? That was sexy as fuck.
