Anyone got any advice on how we deal with the next door neighbours from hell?
* dog with abandonment issues
* penchant for chopping wood on the slate (in front of the fire) until 1/2am
* loud 80s cock rock
* hash heads (if not more)

We've tried going round and asking nicely, but that caused the bongoing to start and now they've added a penny whistle. Thing is we are in a row of terrace houses, with a heavily pregnant (8 weeks till she pops) lady on one side and the wierdos on the other. Thing is that nice, pregnant neighbour, can hear them too. I think we're going to get mad soon...

Any hints and tips gratefully received - I mean, we're no angels, but we are considerate!

PS we're in the UK

Renters.
To be fair I am sure we could (eventually) manage to get a hold of the landlord, but that could take weeks. What I was hoping for was some other people's (positive please, fill me with courage) experiences and suggestions.
I am unsure what the landlord would do though, since so far they have trashed the back yard fence, smashed the front window, let off the fire extinguishers.... superdooper intelligent people here...

I like the idea Emerald Eyed... the tenants look like cocroaches as it happens...
if only i could track down the landlord...

not sure where you are in UK but do you have anything like the council information offices like in London? Someone there might be able to help you.

i'm afraid we're a tad backwards here - we'll send a carrier pigeon to find out|!

what really irks is that we had got rid of the mjr dealers; it arrived on a thursday, and in a flurry of excitement it was sold until 5am...

i think we could cope ok if they did it now and again, or at the weekends, but helloooooooo! it's the start of the week... the poundshop door bell rings constantly... arrrrgghhh

if your town/city has a noise ordinence, call the police. The landlord should be informed but he/she/them is not the renter's babysitter, that is why you call the police.

Well I agree with that- the police for the noise.

Here in Australia if there is a noisy dog, you call the council and they send the ranger, the ranger checks to make sure the dog isnt being mistreated or neglected and can issue warnings and fines about noise.

That would be what I would do anyway

Politely point out the problem one more time, hopefully with other neighbors around to back you up. Then tell them, very clearly, that one more time and you will call the police. Then call the police EVERY SINGLE TIME. Sure, the police will get tired of it, and the offending renters will think you're an ass (personally, I wouldn't care what they thought). But the more tired the police get, the harsher they tend to be, and the more the renters face fines and such, the faster they will consider moving somewhere else.

I've done it. Whatever you choose to do, persistence is the key. :)

Sheath is right, you would be amazed at what people call the police for... a noise complaint, barking dog, loud music, pounding around, a fight next door, whatever... and they will go out and deal with it.

You should be able to enjoy your time at home without having to share the activities, sleep schedule, music preferences as your neighbors...

Something else you can do is write a letter to the landlord (with your rent) EVERY month, telling them politely that if soemthing isn't done soon you'll consider that a breach of your lease and have to move... when you finally can't take anymore, change the letter to a 30 day notice that you'll be moving.

Good luck neighbors can be a pain in the ass.

you need to call the enviromental(sp) heath offices they have a dept about polution (includiing noise) from neighbours. they will issue a warning to both the landlord and the renters.
the one to the landlord is more effectice as he can be stopped from renting his property out in the future.

but if the landlord is the same as yours just becarefull that he dosent give you noitece as well for giving him gref

I agree with amiden hunter, contact the environmental health. My Nanna lived next door to excessively noisy teenagers and she finally got sometyhing done by contacting environmental health. You shouldn't have to put up with such excissibve noise, no one should .

Write up a professional looking Eviction notice. put it on their door or in their mailbox and put a contact number of a friend of yours (or a number you know noone ever pics up) saying it is in the hands of building managment now and the landlord is out of the loop. Make sure you give several "violations" also that are a breech of the lease. Give them 15-30 days to vacate before 'the authoraties' will remove the. :) Ive see this work on two seperate occasions.. It was great to because they got sued by the building for fleeing the property without notice as well.

Or you could just listen for them coming and going run to the door and just stare at them. Not in a threatening way just blankly stare everytime they come and go.

the sudden start of bongoing at 3am was too much for my flat mate the other morning.
we've tracked down the landlord through the land registry - he was unaware of any of the 'tenants', indeed he thought that there were 3 (different) people living there, rather than the 6 that are inhabiting it.
the landlord is not my landlord - thank god!
they had another property over the road that was trashed by other people, so we suspect they will now react pdq.

she also phoned enviro health re dog, noise... yadda yadda. they think they have had dealings with the people before, and if it is the right bunch of people then they don't like authority and move on when challenged. fingers crossed.

thanks for the responses... i'm soooo thankful that i am getting my own place (end terrace) soon. yay!
