Last week, the Nobel committee for literature awarded the 2012 prize to Chinese writer Mo Yan rather than Japanese writer Haruki Murakami. The decision has been widely, and rightly, criticized as a travesty. By any measure, Murakami's literary output has been greater, received more acclaim, awards and enjoys far greater readership. The committee even praised Yan by saying his work had a great "halluciongenic" quality. Anyone who has read Murakami would know that he even wins by that charactarization. It's all an insult and international embarrassment.
So, why did it happen?
It's because earlier in the same week Kyoto University Professor Shinya Yamanaka was awarded a share of the 2012 prize in medicine for his work on stem cell research.
I smell something rotten in Norway, one that aims for geo-political balance.
The Nobel has now lost all credit. Of course, we knew that several years ago when a certain US President was awarded the Peace prize for, well, what exactly?
