I can't vouch for the truthfulness of these tales...I got it in an email, but to be honest, it sounds just like our good ol' justice system at work.

This is beyond insane:

January 2000 - Kathleen Robertson of Austin, Texas was awarded $780,000 by a jury of her peers after breaking her ankle tripping over a toddler who was running amuck in a furniture store. The owners of the store were understandably surprised at the verdict, considering the misbehaving tyke was Ms. Robertson's son.

**********
June 1998: 19-year-old Carl Truman of Los Angeles won $74,000 and medical expenses when his neighbor ran his hand over with a Honda Accord. Mr. Truman apparently didn't notice someone was at the wheel of the car whose hubcap he was trying to steal.

**********
October 1998: Terrence Dickson of Bristol, Pennsylvania was exiting a house he finished robbing by way of the garage. He was not able to get the garage door to go up, the automatic door opener was malfunctioning. He couldn't reenter the house because the door connecting the house and the garage locked when he pulled it shut. The family was on vacation, so Mr. Dickson found himself locked in the garage for eight days. He subsisted on a case of Pepsi he found, and a large bag of dry dog food. This upset Mr. Dickson, so he sued the homeowner's insurance, claiming the situation caused him undue mental anguish. The jury agreed to the tune of a half a million dollars and change.

**********
October 1999: Jerry Williams of Little Rock, Arkansas was awarded $14,500 and medical expenses after being bitten on the buttocks by his next door neighbor's beagle. The beagle was on a chain in it's owner's fenced-in backyard, as was Mr. Williams. The award was less than that sought after because the jury felt the dog may have been provoked by Mr. Williams, who, at the time, was shooting it repeatedly with a pellet gun.

**********
May 2000: A Philadelphia restaurant was ordered to Amber Carson of Lancastor, Pennsylvania $113,500 after she slipped on a spilled soft drink and broke her coccyx. The beverage was on the floor because Ms. Carson threw it at her boyfriend 30 seconds earlier during an argument.

**********
December 1997: Kara Walton of Claymont, Delaware successfully sued the owner of a nightclub in a neighboring city when she fell from the bathroom window to the floor and knocked out her two front teeth. This occurred while Ms. Walton was trying to sneak through the window in the lady's room to avoid paying the $3.50 cover charge. She was awarded $12,000 and dental expenses.

When I'm in New York next year, I'm going to visit the Empire State Building and sue them for my claustrophobia.

You'd be better off coming to Alabama, and suing the state because the humidity gives you hives. It's the state with the highest awards in lawsuits.

No lawsuit is too stupid, and no amount of money is too much.

You mean vertigo?

Hehe, now I'm going to have some fun checking on those stories. :p

Like I never tire of saying, it's after reading something like that, I'm glad I'm not an American :D

Why does this surprise you?

In Massachusetts if I trespass on someones property, step into the hole the homeowners dug to plant a tree, and break my leg the home owner is liable for my injuries.

In the same state if I break into your house and trip over your kids toys. You, the home owner are liable for my injuries. The same is true if someone breaks into your house and is attacked by your dog. (Oh and your dog will be labeled as being dangerous and destroyed by the state.)

In West Palm Beach Florida a Police Officer is being investigated for Cruelty to an animal. He shot a dog. The case as described is the officer, (as well as several others,) were serving an arrest warrant on a suspected Drug Dealer. When the Officers entered the house they saw the suspect running towards the back of the house, as well as a large Dog running towards the Officers. One of the officers fired his service weapon three times killing the dog. The mans Girlfriend is the one accusing him of Cruelty to animals, claiming the dog, (A Pitbull Rotweiler mix weighing over 100 pounds,) was harmless and would have backed away if given the command to.

Make sure, though, to scroll down the page to read some of the ludicrous lawsuits that actually have been heard... and, mostly, lost.

Like I said, I got it in an email, so had no idea how true the stories were. *shrug*

Although, if I was so inclined, I could make your jaws drop with some of the cases that have netted multi-million dollar awards here in Alabama. It's gotten to the point that people come here to file suit against corporations.

"Come to Alabama....where if your brain isn't melted when you get here, it'll be that way shortly."
