Looking at the NHL standings tonight, I must say I am horrified. I all of a sudden have a sick feeling in my stomach. I have gone from absolutely loving the 2002-2003 season to possibly dreading the playoffs.

What did I see that as caused such grief and anxiety?

NHL Western Conference standings:

1st - Dallas Stars (34-12-13-1) 82 pts
.
.
.
8th - Edmonton Oilers (26-21-6-7) 65 pts

NHL fans know what I am getting at here.. The Stars and Oilers are playoff rivals. Forget the Leafs/Senators or Red Wings/Avalanche. Dallas v Edmonton is always a bitter, hard fought playoff series. Five of the last six years these two teams have met in the playoffs and each time has been a war. Granted Dallas has won four of those five playoff series.. but it's still a war of attrition.

I was feeling good about the Stars chance this year. Damnit I was more than feeling good about their chances! But Edmonton scares the hell out of me. It scares me even more if the Stars meet them in a first round series. I'd rather have the Stars play the Wings or Avalanche. ANYONE but Edmonton!

The last thing I want to see this year is "Stars versus Oilers VI"

And I know there are alot of Stars and Oilers fans that feel the same way.

Unless it's in the West final.. then I may be ok with that... maybe..

None of it matters...

This is Toronto's year... ;D

Us Leaf's fans are known for being pragmatic, and never getting too worked up over our team... Err...

And Raiders fans are polite, civil, dress well, don't put on their mother's make up and never think of burning down a McDonalds afeter seeing their team get blasted in the Super Bowl...

:)

Funny thing is I would like to root for the Leafs. Behind the Stars I'd like to consider the Leafs my second favorite team.. But three things prvent me from being any kind of Leafs fan

- I'm from western Canada and thus I must have a natural resentment to anything from Toronto.

- Bob Cole and Harry Neele

- The fact Leafs fans bitched and whined about losing Cujo and getting Belfour when us Dallas fans knew all along you guys were getting a far better goaltender.

You know LT, I've bitched you out about a lot of your dumber hockey opinions but that's going to stop. Firstly, I've recently become much more mature, second I've come to the slow realization that you're the only one here to talk hockey with.

So I'll dispute two of your three things with the Leafs politely

2) Nobody, nobody calls a game with more passion and emotion than Cole and Neale. They're great at what they do.

3) Nobody that I ever heard discuss the situation ever complained about the Cujo/Eddie thing in terms of hockey playin' ability. I think we can agree that I hear more Leafs fans opinions than you do and the complaints about the goalie mess broke down into two camps, Those who didn't want to see Cujo go because he was a fan favourite and important in the community and those who didn't like the way the Leafs handled it. Everyone from Damien Cox on down never said anything bad about Eddie.

In the Stanley Cup playoffs, I'm putting my money on the Omaha Sperm Torpedoes.

I agree and I'm a Habs fan...

This is Toronto's year

Let's see, i have heard that for...how many years has it been since '67?

Actually, if Toronto was going to do it, this would be their year, except for Ottawa...damn them....

You know it baby.....

It's a payback for those other few times.....

Oilers

Oilers
Oilers
Oilers
Oilers
Oilers
Oilers
Oilers!!!!!!!

This year, baby.....Toronto/Edmonton for the Stanley Cup Final. Best of seven....tied, three apice...

I'd kill for tickets to that.

*smiles*

2002/2003 - Year of the Oil.

I think, with a big deadline deal or just a significant one, that the Leafs chances this year are as good as theyve been in those 36 years. Nobody matches up well with us in the East and anything can happen in the Finals.

Don't be surprised if you see the city of toronto trashing the streets this June or August or whenever the Cup ends nowadays.

2) Nobody, nobody calls a game with more passion and emotion than Cole and Neale. They're great at what they do.

Very true..

Reasons #1 and #2 for me are said tounge-in-cheek really. Back a year or two ago when thier calling of a game was a hot issue, I did think Neale was a little more biased towards Toronto but that was just because he probably knew them better than any team in the NHL because he follows them. (The fact he told people to 'bite his ass' didn't help the idea he wasn't biased)

I've never once thought of Bob Cole as biased though, but it's something I still hear among my friends here out west.. "Why are those two so biased? It's because they are from Toronto!"

the complaints about the goalie mess broke down into two camps, Those who didn't want to see Cujo go because he was a fan favourite and important in the community and those who didn't like the way the Leafs handled it.

It's all a matter of perspective really.. out here there is/was a perception that Maple Leafs fans thought Eddie B was a serious downgrade from CuJo. Of course you as a Leafs fan in Ontario had / has a much better grasp of the true reaction of Leafs fans.

But it's been more about personal biased feelings as well... I've never really liked CuJo back from his first days as an Oiler and of course Belfour is (at this point) the best goalie the Stars have ever had and led the team to a cup in 99.

So this past summer any time I'd read in the paper or see on TV how Leafs fans reacted to CuJo leaving, I'd be sitting there thinking "How can these people be so upset when they are getting a proven winner to replace him?"

Granted CuJo is a good guy and has done many charitable things in both Edmonton and Toronto, and I can understand why he would be missed.. but I still think (as Dallas fans chanted against Roy and his Av's in 99) "Eddie's Better"

2002/2003 - Year of the Oil.

Few times? Try the last four times!

I think after five playoff series wins in a row, Edmonton will have to change their name from "Oilers" to the "Edmonton Stars's bitches"

My hope is for a Stars / Senators final.. My best friend is a huge Sens fan (as big as I am Stars) so it would make for an awesome as hell week or two of being at each others throats. :)

But at the same time I'd like to see Belfour and the Leafs beat the Sens again.. I think a Leafs / Stars final would be just as kick ass.

By the way Nathon just as a side note and just for your own personal reference: I hate the Kodiaks! :p

I'll be honest, I never was a Cujo fan(outside of his work with the children). I thought he was so-so playoff goalie who had a habit of choking in big games(Although two big game 7's this year shut me up a little)

Again, I really think all of the anger coming at the Leafs over Cujo was basically being upset that the Leafs couldn't do what they said was priority #1(signing Cujo) and the message it sent to the UFA's out there.

As to Cole and Neale, I have a pretty simple question. While I understand why it might be annoying to hear a bunch of games broadcast by a pair of guys biased against your team why do you believe that hockey broadcasters, who are not journalists, have a responsibility to be unbiased? They're entertainers, pure and simple and have no more reason to be unbiased than Cherry does.

I'll be honest I really think this year is going to be Red Wings/Leafs. Which will be huge for us to beat the hell out of Cujo.

ROFuckingL... The Ottawa Sportsnet crew sponsered a poll in cooperation with the Ottawa Sun. The results of the poll was that a *vast* majority of Sens fans would be MORE satisfied if the Senetors beat the Buds in the playoffs then WINNING THE STANLEY CUP...

to me hockey is like cricket
I have never figured out the rules
I have to say though
Go Coyotes

*sobbing* I don't think the Habs will even make the playoffs this year :(

It's tough being a Habs fan!

I'm rooting for the Avalanche if we don't make it. (Sentimental attachement to the old Nordiques and Patrick Roy)

Two boys are playing hockey on a pond in a park in Toronto, when one is attacked by a rabid Rottweiler. Thinking quickly, the other boy takes his stick, wedges it down the dog's collar and twists, breaking the dog's neck. A reporter who was strolling by sees the incident, and rushes over to interview the boy.

"Young Leafs Fan Saves Friend From Vicious Animal," he starts writing in his notebook. "But I'm not a Leafs fan," the little hero replied. "Sorry, since we are in Toronto, I just assumed you were." said the reporter and starts again.

"Little Jays Fan Rescues Friend From Horrific Attack" he continued writing in his notebook. "I'm not a Jays fan either," the boy said. I assumed everyone in Toronto was either a Leafs or Jays fan. What team, do you root for?" the reporter asked. "I'm a Montreal Canadiens fan." the child said. The reporter starts a new sheet in his notebook and writes, "Little French Bastard from Montreal Kills Beloved Family Pet."

You'd be the same way if your team kept losing year after year to a certain team... especialy after the ways Ottawa has lost to Toronto.

I know there are alot of Edmonton fans who would love nothing more than to see the Oilers beat the Stars in a playoff series and then consider the entire year a sucess.

Calgary Flames fans were that way as well.. It was a very sweet feeling to have the Flames beat the Oilers out of the playoffs.

Speaking of silence: All those fans of western teams that are ahead of the Dallas Stars, please feel free to speak your mind...

Now THAT is sweet silence!

:D

Sorry cutie! 5-3 Leafs.

Kind of shocking given the fact Montreal was really on fire in the second period.
