No Herd Immunity to Delta ?

Since Covid first broke out we have been accustomed to hearing that we need 70 to 80 % to be fully vaccinated to achieve Herd Immunity. However, the Delta strain has a much higher threshold 88 to 90% which compares with Polio at 86%, measles at 95% or Smallpox at 75%.

Three viral diseases Smallpox, Rinderpest and Polio have all been eliminated, the first two being extinct. Herd immunity in these diseases eventually contributed, but only after an almost total acceptance of a universal vaccination campaign.

Given the strong opposition to Covid vaccination and the apparently increasing ineffectiveness of MRNA vaccines over time (Pfizer, Moderna, J& J) to the Delta strain, it seems that the elimination of Covid is still a long way off.

If people choose to remain unvaccinated, and get sick. Good on them. It's their choice... and there's too many people on Earth anyway.

If you are all about "sustainable living" then you'd have to agree that the carrying capacity of the Earth is somewhat lower than it's current population. Reduce the population by 20%. For the environment.

Having a background in genetics, I always understood there is no such thing as herd immunity. But it was a handy tool to get people vaccinated

Herd Immunity is almost impossible to achieve. Complete vaccination doesn't fully protect but cuts the transmission and the severity of Covid.

But given the entrenched opposition in the US, Covid will be with you for decades to come...

Yeah, the annual flu vaccine has really mitigated that virus...

And now, this morning, I read reports that the vaccines only protect
you for a short period of time. So, yet another annual shot.

I don't get the flu shot; it seems to be pointless.

We knew that we would probably need a booster shot.
I also get my flu vaccine.

Many of those currently hospitalised in the UK are regretting that they didn't get the shot... There are more unvaccinated patients than those who have had the vaccines, and those unvaccinated are sicker.

My question remains, why am I teated as if I were a criminal if I don't
get the shot which may be ineffectual and a short-term solution
when I've already survived a bout with the virus at the
very beginning of the pandemic?

I think that some of the most ardent pro-vaccinators on the Left
are more politically motivated than they are Science-oriented.

I'll say it again, I'm not getting the shot.
It's a damned waste of time
and resources...

The vaccines are NOT ineffectual. They provide good protection against catching the virus and mitigates the severity IF you get it. They are not perfect but they are far better than nothing, and a booster shot could help as well. But it is your choice. I hope you don't regret it.

The US politics around the vaccines are worrying. Is it a plot to kill Republicans by telling them it is a Democratic plot?

Again. Patiently. I already have the antibodies; the hard way.

I contracted it before there were any vaccines.

Edited to add, some Democrats don't trust it.
In fact some of the biggest Democrat cheerleaders of today
were the same Democrats of yesterday saying not to trust it because...

You know...

TRUMP

;)

The Trump effect could have influenced the UK's take-up. If Trump said we don't need it, we Brits said "Fuck you, Trump! You are an asshole so we want it - now!"

At this point the science behind the shot is suspect. If you can't sort through the bullshit about wear a mask, get the shot so you don't have to wear a mask, wear a mask even if you got the shot because you can still get the covid, BOOSTERS, get your Wuflu boosters here!!!... then where's the TRUTH?

Is the shot effective? It seems that it's not if we still have to wear masks because we might still catch it even after getting jabbed. It also seems that getting the vax also doesn't stop you from spreading the virus to those who've been vaxxed also. Then there's the efficacy issue; do you build immunity or not? The flu shot is annual because the flu mutates and makes you last shot ineffective. Is this what covid is doing? Or is that what big pharma and big gov are telling us without showing us the science behind it?

I no longer trust the government, or the medical industry, to tell me the truth on anything Covid. YMMV

Meanwhile, those who actually remember what went down last year and how we got to where there is a vaccine are saying "Thank you Mr. President."

And we in the UK thank our own scientists who developed a vaccine.

Yet, 97% of people hospitalized now for Covid are unvaccinated.

100% of everyone in the hospital last year were unvaccinated. So what's your point? Is it because we have a vaccine everyone should automatically get the jab?

Why?

Sure, you go ahead and believe that's all that happened.

I don't. But in the US, Trump was more an obstacle than a facilitator. The vaccines were developed despite his stupid endorsements of super solutions and ridiculing of the threat.

Meanwhile the rest of us can remember the FDA (and comparable other national drug ministries) approvals that happened in MONTHS instead of years. Approvals that happened because of Trump's insistence on speedy intervention. Which kind of tells the rest of us that your belief he "ridiculed the threat" is misplaced.

Meanwhile, while Trump was closing the border, creating a Covid task force, and then instituting Operation Warp Speed, most progressive politicians were telling everyone to "come on down" and party like it's 1999.

That's not opinion, it's historical FACT, so if you want to belief whatever anti-Trump lie you have to tell yourself to get through the day, go ahead.

Oh goody, Tim is expounding on science. Hang on while I get comfy.

Go fuck yourself Archie. The world would be better off if you just gave yourself a new garrote for a necktie.
