Well my computer went in to the shop to be checked over...

I found out my DSL modem isn't compatible with the DSL services around here..

I don't get it.. and I'm starting to think that someone is attempting to screw me. One server wants over $300 for an external modem that will work with their service.. but they can't guarentee that it will work with my computer.. The other server wants $144.99 for an internal modem and they aren't sure if it will work with my HP computer either.

Why did my computer come with a built in DSL modem if it won't work? And why would their modems work with their service but not my computer? Better question.. why the fuck do they think I'm going to buy it if it doesn't work with my computer? I'm blonde.. but i neither look nor act stupid.

Both companies told me there is different kinds of DSL services and different kind of DSL modems.. So I asked them, why don't you have the kind of service my computer is ready for? They gave me a dumb look and said "it ain't available in this area. Maybe you need to call someone in Olympia". I said "Uh Duh.. I live here.. if you don't have it here.. NO ONE will!" They said "You could buy a new modem." I said "bye"

In the Northeast its a rental issue, the service provides the modem. I have found my provider to be excellent in regards to customer service and would never deal with cable or dial up in the future.

Freaky, I've got Telocity/DirecTv. THEY supply the modem, for $25 shipping.

Maybe you can get their service where you are at? I've had DSL for 2 years now, and have had less than a few hours outage since I got it, and that's through 2 different providers. Of course the ACTUAL phone company is 2 block form my house too, so that may be why it's such great service.

I DO have my old modem from the first service, maybe you can find out from them which modem you need, and it's COULD be compatible? Let me know.

Lo

Often they'll get you to sign up with their service telling you that you qualify, and then they'll never call you back. THen when you do call back, it turns out you never qualified. It's happened to my immediate family three times.

Ain't it great Mouse? *hugs his DSL and kisses it lovingly*
I can download entire porn movies in less than half an hour!

MM, i'm in bumfuck Washington state.. I think we are actually lucky to have indoor plumbing out here..

My dial up service is awesome.. and my ISP (my phone company) has been very helpful but I just don't understand why the modem I bought already installed in my computer won't work. And they just keep going on about some chipset. *shrugs* I'm a computer idiot to a point. So maybe this will never sink in. :(

Lobito-I looked into DirectTV service.. again.. bumfuck Washington... it's not available.. the only two services in our area are telling me the same thing... "buy our modem".

I don't have a problem buying the modem, but no one is sure it is compatible (with my HP computer), and if it isn't they can't take it back. I'm not spending money on a non sure thing.

I'm totally confused..

Porn? I use it to keep up on current events. Some people, geez.

I'm sure we have the same service and while their phone services suck, they have done DSL correctly from the start.

Uh huh, suuuuuuuuure :D

And if you're telling the truth, for the love of Pete download KaZaA right now and get yourself some porn while it lasts.

And yeah, I live wayyyy far out in the sticks of Vermont, as MM can testify, and I've got great DSL service. Lucky us! Although, every once in a while I still have to go to NH for a while and we're stuck with either dial up or paying a couple hundred a month for cable or DSL.. It blows.

Guys.. 'scuse me.. this is MY rant thread... don't hi jack it about downloading porn.. and how wonderful your god damn DSL is.. I for one.. don't wanna hear it.

got it?

good..

now either talk about me... or leave;)

Hmmm, looks like I'll have company at the dial up table they put me at in the alley.

I'm pissed I can't even get the full 56k.

Sorry bout the no DSL for you....I know what it's like not having a choice.

I am completely unable to get either cable or DSL, pity me!
As for different kinds of DSL, the two main kinds are ADSL, which uses all channels on your basic twisted copper wire, and VDSL, which uses a fiber optic cable. Unless you've got fiber in your area, which is hideously expensive, it should be ADSL. Strange that the built-in NIC doesn't work, but you're always taking that chance when you buy a computer built with proprietary components. They don't tell you about compatibility issues, though, they just say "Dude, you're gettin' a Dell!"

they haven't put me in the alley as of yet.. I'm still connecting at 53,333 bps... I can't complain.. atleast it isn't as bad as my ex husbands connection.. 14,000bps.. NOW that would piss me off!

we have ADSL service, and I have a ADSL Modem that has several different set up options on it. But the provider said none of them worked when they attempted to set it up through their server (on a dummy account)

HP says it should be compatible.. my servers says it's not.. I'm sorry, but it sounds like a rip off to me.

Holy crap! 14.4!!!

Now my 28.8 looks like the speed of light.

LOL.. I know.. and get this.. in the area they live in DSL isn't even available and they live in a larger town than I do. Has something to do with really old under ground phone lines.

NO Damn Sex Life for me either...........ohhhhh you are talking puters.......

Freaky... DSL won't be an option for me EVER. When I called the phone company, they laughed at me. My dial up service sucks, I connect at 19200 if I'm lucky. :(

SO, I'm looking into sattelite service through DIRECWAY . It's my only option, and it may be an option for you too. It's offered on it's own, and also as a package with your TV satellite service, which is what I'm considering

It's the same bullshit here.

You know that I am IN the area that supposedly supports cable modems yet it's not available for me?

What the hell is that about?

What pisses me off is that my friend lives in a town even shittier than mine and he has DSL!

Why can't we get a break, huh?

My ex husband called about satellite service.. and it's way out of the price range any of us are willing to pay. I would love a fast connection.. but I'm not paying more than my rent for it.. :D

I'll keep my 53333bps connection.. really it's not that bad.

Dsl oh joy but unfortunately it's part of my dreams like wining the lottery not likely to happen.
My dial up is so slow I'm sure it on a work to rule.
oh well I'm sure that technology will eventually reach the rural parts of the uk.
Hey Freaky We have only just got in door plumping unfortuantely the surage system hasn't got this far nor have the gas pipes so I suppose hope for DSL is a little optimistic.
