NJ Gov Resigns over "Gay" Affair

Wow--a big news day for the GLBT community.

TRENTON, N.J. - In a stunning declaration, Gov. James E. McGreevey announced his resignation Thursday and acknowledged that he had an extramarital affair with another man. "My truth is that I am a gay American," he said with his wife by his side at a nationally televised news conference.

Wow! that doesnt happen very often that a public figure head announces that he is gay. Most of the time they deny it with their dying breath.

My guess is that he was about to be outed by someone. There is a lot more to the story. Stuff involving handing out jobs and money etc...

Supposedly he's resigning because he was cheating on his wife, not because he's gay. Which is, of course, a crock of shit: almost every man in power (especially in politics) has at some point cheated on his wife.

Yes, he probably was going to be outed soon. The guy he had an affair with (named Golan Cipel) was apparently blackmailing him:

The lawyer for Golan Cipel said a deal was struck minutes before McGreevey's announcement Thursday under which Cipel would be paid an undisclosed amount of money in exchange for not filing a sexual harassment lawsuit. The lawyer, Allen Lowy, said he believed there was an agreement and was surprised when, minutes later, McGreevey made his announcement.

Personally, I think it would have been awesome if he had said "yeah, I'm gay, and guess what? I ain't leaving." Then they'd have forced him out of office, and there could have been a lawsuit or something. But no, he's just going to back down. Oh well, hopefully he's leaving more because of the blackmail and giving out jobs etc. than because of being gay.

If you wanted to help us, instead of hurt us...you would have not hired your lover, come out in a loving way, not set yourself up for blackmail, and stayed to fight for our rights.
