How do I know if they're going to fit and how do I get used to them? Any comments would help

I personally would stay away from what are called the alligator clips. I've found them to be too smallish for most female nipples. (though they would work really well on men's nipples!) There are what are called tweezer clamps - called that because they look like tweezers. There is a tiny ring that slides along the length of the clamp, making the tension adjustable. You simply stop when the sensation stops being pleasurable.
Then there are what are called bull-nosed clamps. These usually are blunt end clamps, and come with a screw in the middle to adjust the tension. You simply unscrew the screw, clamp the nipple (or labia or clit or whatever), then tighten the screw until you have the tension desired.
But before you got out and spend money on these, I would recommend using ordinary clothespins. Avoid the plastic ones, and get the wooden ones. New ones will have a very tight tension on them, and if you aren't used to the sensation, it will hurt. So my recommendation is to force the clothespin open slightly, opening the spring. This lessens the tension. Keep doing that until you find a tension that is pleasurable to you. If you come to the conclusion that you like clamps, then you can start looking into buying a pair at that time.
How to get used to them? Practice and build up. I personally love my nipples clamped hard. Most women can't tolerate that. Begin slowly, easily. Clamp your nipples lightly and let yourself get used to the feeling. Gradually build up to more and more tension. Also, for me, I might start off with lightly clamped nipples, but as things get hot and heavy, I want a tighter and tighter tension on my nipples. That is why the tweezer and/or bull-nosed clamps work well - you can increase the tension as you go. With clothespins, you simply change to various tensions.
If you do clamp your nipples, be careful not to keep them clamped for too long. 15 minutes is normally the suggested timeframe. While clamping your nipples won't cause any harm, clamping them for longer than 15 mins deprives them of blood flow.
Oh, speaking of which. Once you have clamped your nipples and left them on for a bit, be careful when you remove them. Most people think that clamping the nipples is what hurts. Uh-huh. Nope. It's the unclamping that can hurt. When all that blood rushes back into that tender skin! To minimize this, take a deep breath and let it out slowly as the clamp is being removed. It helps if your partner immediately uses his/her tongue and lips to caress the skin. There may be a shot of pain, but if you follow this, it will be short and minimal. But then, there are those of us who like those shots of pain!

I have to agree with sexychele on this one, she has said just about everything you need. But before you go and spend the money try clothespins and such to see if it is for you. There are all different kinds depending on what you are looking for. Some are adjustable you have to try some to see what you may like.
