Is the new cube or whatever it's called going to replace the Nintendo 64?

Will they stop making 64 games? Just wondering if I should upgrade my son's system. He's drooling over the new Mario game they are advertising like crazy now.

Also, is it the same cartridge system? He's fairly hard on discs. I'd hate for it to be CD format.

You mean the new X box? that's a microsoft product.. I'm sure it's a piece of shit.. :D

my son wants it.. but we decided this year.. NO VIDEO games.. at his dads house he has 5 different systems and over 100 games.. (this is not including game boys)

here at my house we have 2 different systems.. and well over 500 games (used to own a video store, so we have all the old dumb ones.. *L*)

Check around on the net.. maybe msn.com has some info.. or microsoft.com

Some independant companies may still make games for the N64, but Nintendo will no longer support. The Game Cube uses a mini-DVD format (just like DVD's, only smaller:)) The new Mario is Luigi's Mansion and does indeed look quite appetizing. Others to look out for on the system include Rogue Squadron II from LucasArts and a strange yet apparently (don't know myself) very enjoyable game called Pikmin.

As for being hard on the games, how old is the kid?

The X-Box is also a console that just came out, indeed released by Microsoft. It has several salivary games as well. Just depends on your taste. Oh, the Game Cube is a hundred bucks cheaper btw.

I don't think that's it, Freaky. It's Nintendo for sure. I think it's called the Game Cube.

My life was much more simply before video games.

Thanks for the information, kitsuke! Wow, so no more N64 games? Bummer.

He's 5 and he's ruined many a CD-Rom game before, so I don't know if it's a good idea to switch him over just yet.

Ruby

Yeah...it's mini-CD type format. They won't really be making any more games for the N64...and if you intend to upgrade...do it soon, because there might be problems if you wait for the Christmas rush.

Playstation 96

That's the last time I spent any time on video games, and I did get into it for hours for one night at my girlfriend's parents house , but I swore at the time, I would forever know even less about computers...

I dunno' Ruby...I just came here to say Hi:cool:

Short Answer: Yes

Long Answer: Kinda.

It's called LAGS by author David Pouge. Latest and Greatest Syndrome and the technology industry has a raging case of it.

The Game Cube is the latest offering fron Nintendo the industry giant. It uses three inch DVDs as opposed to the Standard CD size Five inch. It'll have about twenty games out for it by year's end.

Developers (Who have Lags like hookers have herpes) will still continue making N64 games... for a while. There aren't mant Super Nintendo, NES or Atari 2600 games around, are there?

The demand for N64 games will continue for a little bit... then as the kids get the new system the demand will drop. And eventually, there won't be new games for it.

My advice: If you got little ones, check out which system will have the Harry Potter game... It's exclusive to one systen, but I can't remeber which one it'll be.

Well, if you are willing to monitor more closely and put up with a few tantrums about it (I know, because I threw them when we first got our Nintendo... waaaaaaay back when I a wee lad) you can usually keep him from ruining the games. What ya pretty much have to do is monitor him when he is playing, keep it in a place where he can use the controller but not reach the console (lock it up and drill a hole for the controller if you have to) and switch it for him when he wants to play a different game). It is higher maintainance, but if you gradually phase him into how to care for it, it can be a lot better in the long run. It all depends on how You want to do it though.

Unless it's snapped in half it may be salvagable. COntrary to popular belief the shiny side of the CD isn't the more valuable side- The information is printed right under the label. There's some system you can buy or somehwere you can go where they sand down your CDs and try to salvage them that way.

If it's no big deal then wait... You can see what games are avaiable and the system will be less expensive....

Corse I'm cheap. ;)

Wonder if it'll have the info on the dang thing's bugginess? OR perhaps the fact that Australia's been having a spat with them cos they spray painted logos on the sidewalks....

Well the X Box isn't a box at all...It's not even a rectangular prism. The game cube is a six inch cube... but I don't know if it will be as engineerily praised as Apple's.

What? It's not the shiny side? Ok, who told me it was? Fess up.

Are you serious? This whole time I've been concerned about the wrong side of the disc? I feel like a lesbian at a bachlor party.

Ruby

The shiny side is important only because that is what the laser reads the info through. If it gets a scratch you can polish (carefully) it out, or get a repair job done (basically just a machine that does a REEEAL good polish job).

The X-Box does not have a whole lot of issues with bugginess. There were some incidents and myraid rumors before it was released, but I dare you to sit down with a buddy and spend an entire afternoon playing Halo and not come away with yer shorts full of cream ;).

Okay, that was a bit graphic, but hey, I LIKE that game.

Basically every told you that cos scratches DO interfere with being read. But yeah, it's printed high up there anticipating scratches. So don't take your keys to the printed side. :)

HOLD IT... WAIT A MINUTE

ok.. i take a blank cd.. i put it into my computer... i burn music.. or save info from my computer on it

where does the info go? I thought it "burned" it onto the back of the cd...

Your CD Burner's laser "burns" (heat imprints) the data on your cd. It goes through the clear/somewhat tinted shiny side to strike the ROM material (Read Only Memory, memory from which data can only be retrieved). This ROM material is actually closer to the face up side of the cd. All it is is added protection to give the cd a longer life.

Sorry to use all the baby talk, but I wanted it to be clear to those of us who just trun the power on and click on the blue swirly "e" to get here. :) Love ya all.

You want to get more confused? You didn't burn a CD. You created an optical disk. The optical disk is read just like a CD due to (in audio's case) The CDA format. :) Optical disks don't last as long, supposedly, but who can tell? They really han't tested them for the lengths that CDs have. CDs are "pressed" by huge machines... Those machines operate in absolute dust free enviroments, a single speck can ruin thousands of polyeurithane discs or potential Cds.

Want another trip? You know what makes burning the Cd (ok, I used slang there ;) ) slow? The software! We have hardware that can write faster than the software can handle it.

I've never known anybody to get results with one... of course I've never known anybody who owns one :p

Okay--about CD's. Yes, you do burn things into the shiny side...but there is a plastic cover on the shiny side that protects and contains the thin piece of whatever is in there (I think it's silicon, but I really don't know)

The reason the printed side is more vulnerable is because you can easily damage the shape of the wafer-thin sheet with the data on it. Once you get that thing out of shape you can kiss the CD goodbye...that's why they don't want you writing on your CD's with a ball point pen.
