Kim stood looking at her new home. Sure it was cluttered with unpacked boxes, but it was big and it was hers. She was finally free of all the past. Broke off from it. For the first time in her twenty seven years on earth, she felt the weight of the world lift from her shoulders.
It had taken a year and a half, a faked death and a make over to finally vanish, but she managed. She felt like singing and dancing, she felt like crying as well. She had only one connection back in California, a retired old police chief.. Here, she had no one. She barely knew the broker who helped her obtain this old mansion.
She smiled a little. Massachusetts was a distance away, hopefully enough away to escape her past? The house was surrounded by mountains and meadows, a huge twenty foot wall circled the entire property and she was more than ten miles from the small sea side town. She was at last safe from people, safe from their touch and their minds...
Only now she had to figure out what to do with herself?
She moved into the dining room to start unpacking her mother's china when a pounding at the door startled her.
"Who would...?" Her first thought was someone had tracked her down for another assignment.. Or worse, revenge. Her face paled as her hands started shaking.. Could someone she help convict find her here? Was it possible? Anything was possible..
"Stop it!" She chided herself, pushing her panic down to move towards the doorway. She eyed the door, hoping they would go away and leave her be... but that wasn't going to happen. Again the pounding on the door made her jump.
Reacting instantly she ran to her purse grabbing for her stun gun. Pulling it free, she depressed the buttons and watched the little line of electricity jump. Good.. it worked still..
She was alone here, the movers had long since gone. Now what would she do?
The insistant pounding on the door made her realize two things.. Her visitor wasn't going to leave and whomever it was was going to break her damned door down if she didn't open it.
"Wh-who's there?" She called out hoping for some strength behind her question. Her voice came out small and frightened.
"Please! Open the door..." A male voice.
Now what did she do?
"Lady? I mean you no harm.." The voice again plead with her.
He sounded hurt.. Scared? Agitated? She couldn't read his voice, her own thoughts warring so loudly she could barely think straight. Moving slowly forward, she noted the chain was over the door, safe..
She peeked out, barely able to see much but a large black clad man. "What do you want?" She said a little more irritated this time. Much like a normal person would at this time of night.
He glanced behind him, searching the tree line and then up into the sky. "I need assistance.. I will pay you. Any amount, I just need shelter." He turned back to her just as she heard a wolf howl in the forest somewhere.
The giant seemed to sway on his feet, his hand held against his side, his lips pressed together in a pained expression. She let her eyes roam over his face and down his broad chest.. He had a long coat of some kind on, hiding his body, but she could see a shimmer of dampness on his lower left side.
She gasped and stepped back a little, "are you.. Are you hurt?" Her eyes jerked up to his face, noting his look of irritation.
"Yes." It came out clipped, annoyed.
"Well can't you just go to the hospital or something? Why here?" She was worried for him, but cautious as well. Why would she open the door to someone bleeding? She wasn't that stupid!
"I won't make it there in time. How's ten grand?" He rambled off, still searching the area behind him. Someone was chasing him.. She knew it without asking.
She shut the door and pulled off the chain. Pushing the door wide open, she got her first real glimpse of his size as he stood upright. He was at least six-four.. At least! Broad, covered all in black, and blood..
Definite bad guy scenario..
"I will call someone for you.. "
"They won't get here in time. Look lady, will you help me or no? Is it the money? Want more?" He sneared at her as if not used to people helping him and drew out his wallet. He flinched in pain but got his wallet opened. "Here's five thousand..... I will get the more tomorrow night.." He shoved it into her free hand, avoiding the clutched stunner.
"Al-alright.." She looked down at the money, not caring really for the sum of it, but that fact he just touched her and she felt nothing.. She seen nothing?! She had never had that happen before.. Odd.
She moved back and made room for him to enter her home, but he stood immobile inside the door. "What?"
"I can not enter.."
"What?" She looked around, wondering why the hell not?! She just spent a good ten minutes arguing with him about helping, now he wouldn't enter?
"Without permission." He finished with a gasp. Gripping the door, his eyes went wide a little, teetered but managed to stay upright.
"You're welcome in my home! Now come in before you.." She never finished as he fell flat on his face inside her home.
Jumping back, she let out a gasp of surprise and stood motionless for the longest moment. Hesitantly she nudged him with her foot, noting he didn't move a single inch.
"Damn it." She would have fun trying to move him.. Which meant she had to touch him.. She cringed with the thought, not wishing to touch anyone.. never again.
Walking over his head, she bent her knees a little, gripped his coat and pulled him inch by inch inside her home. It took awhile to get his feet cleared of her door before she could shut it and throw the bolt.
She stood worrying her lip, wondering what to do with him when she noticed the amount of blood on the floor.
"Oh great!" She threw up her hands in frustration and moved down to her knees beside him. Pushing and shoving, she got him to his back, all the while complaining about her new home and his blood on it.
"Couldn't you find some where else to bleed?!" She couldn't get him over without a violent shove, which she did. His shoulder hit the back of her couch, but he didn't wake.
Now what would she do? She got up from the floor, moving into her kitchen to grab rags and water. She glared at the man as she scrubbed up the blood, not sure if she was really going to help him or not just yet.
A short while later, she poured cold water over his face, waking the man. "I can't move you damn it and I can't look at your wound until you strip off those clothes." She said matter-of-factly. Normally she wouldnt be such a bitch, but she didn't like this.. Not one bit.. Nor had she figured out why she could touch him, his skin to hers and not see anything.. Amnesia? Possible.. She didn't know him to even ask him his name.
What she needed to do was call the police!
"No.. Please. Don't call them.." His voice was faint, hoarse and dry sounding, but pleading with her.. Good lord those eyes! She gaped at him a second, unsure how he knew her thoughts? The howling outside grew louder, very near her home.. She felt a prickle of alarm go up her back and make her fine hairs on her neck stand up.. She shivered and said nothing for a long moment. "Well then, let's get you into the spare bedroom." What could she do? Why didn't she just leave him on the porch?!
