Just a few general comments and questions on the use of nicknames/handles/identities/whatever-the-hell-you-wanna-call-them.

How did you get yours/come up with yours?

What do you think it says about you?

Do you think your nickname is a good reflection of who you are?

Do you see your online identity in the same way as you see yourself?

Do you like it when people shorten your name?

Do you wish they wouldn't shorten it?

If you could choose a different nickname, what would it be?

Yeah, I know, questions, questions. I guess I've just been thinking about my own nickname recently, and I've also noticed people shortening it to different things, namely "Tat", which I don't like.

It's been a while since I voiced my dislike of this shortening, so I thought: what better way?

My nickname, Tatelou, is just that, and it has been my nickname all my life. It is pronounced Tate (as in the art gallery) Lou (as in loo - toilet).

It's taken from my two actual names: Katie Louise. When I was born, my brother couldn't say my full name, so said "Tatelou" instead. It stuck. My Dad still calls me Tate now.

Anyway, I'll add more answers to my own questions, maybe later.

Lou :rose:

I changed mine from Sub Joe because I was receiving too many PM's from dominatrixes offering to sit on my face.

Pain in the ass, aren't they? At least, I don't doubt some of them wanted to be.

When I first decided to write, my normal user ID would be a dead give-away to who I am and I wanted anonimity. Writing here was a challenge to myself.

I don't mind being called Abs or Abby or anything of that nature, in fact I'm starting to identify with it more.

I'm also known as Jynx or "J"or A/J(see a certain gosling) which I also love, infact it's strange to hear people call me by my real name. I like going by "J" the most. It's who I am now.

Bitch is also good.

M'dear Lou, I have always wondered about your name. Love the explanation.

Been dropping hints a bout mine but no bites yet so here goes.

Eric Shawn Listo

Eric for Eric Von Lustbader who used to baby sit a friend of mine as a teen.

Then something naughty to do with it, maybe pair it with another name---eric bob, nah, eric mike, nope, eric sean, not quite, eric...shawn, yeah, that's it! eric shawn, eric shawn, erec shawn, erec shon, erec tion, erection, ERECTION! Gotta use that!

And Listo? Something a bit exotic maybe, ah yes, the spanish word for READY.

Erection Ready.

C'est moi.

I think cheerful deviant works for me. It doesn't really come form anywhere. I just made it up when I started posting. I wanted something that was kindof different and a little plucky.

I guess it suits me pretty well, I'm usually pretty cheerful, at least in here, and if you read my stories, you would know that I'm a deviant.

I'm mostly the same in real life as in here. A little more of a flirt in here, more shy in real life, but not to much.

I'm mostly CD or Duckie now, with an occasional Dolly (from my alter ego) cheerful, or deev. I think I like Duckie the most but all are good. I have coem to like the way different people call me by different nicks.

I wouldn't want to change it at all. (I get confused to easilly.)

Thanks so much for spelling that out!!! LOL!

You tried to hint to me about it in a PM the other day (in fact, you told me to keep saying "Eric Shawn" over and over again). I did keep saying it in my head, almost all bloody weekend, lol, but the penny didn't drop!

I'm a dippy cow sometimes. ;) :D

Now I know: very cool!!!

How did you get yours/come up with yours?

Well I had a handle from a chatsite that I got kind of stuck with "Vickster" which is very unisex...lots of people used to think I was a bloke and when I went to post my stories here I wanted somehing which would show I was all woman. ;) So English Lady was born :)

What do you think it says about you?

That I'm English and I'm a Lady. *grins*

Do you think your nickname is a good reflection of who you are?

I think maybe my handle looks a bit stuffier than who I am, I don't think I am as elegant as English Lady suggest I am.

Do you see your online identity in the same way as you see yourself?

Yup. I''m just me. online/offline I'm like this :)

Do you like it when people shorten your name?

Yes, I like EL as it sounds alot less formal :) or Lady or even English as sometimes happens :)

Do you wish they wouldn't shorten it?

Shorten away!

If you could choose a different nickname, what would it be?

I don't think I would. I'm crap at nicknames anyway *L*

Well, I hope it was an enjoyable weekend. Maybe if you'd said it out loud for everyone to hear...oops... maybe not.

Thanks for this thread where I could explain myself more completely.;)

Yep, seeing as I kept saying erection over and over again, and didn't even realise it. :D

I'm glad I didn't say it out loud! LOL

Thank YOU! Even more glad I started up this thread now.

Thanks to everyone, for your responses so far. It's all good and interesting stuff!

I wrote a few stories under the pseudonym "Capybara." I think capybara is one of those words which are just a delight to say. Like mukluks, beluga, McBoingboing, or Ouagadougou. There are dozens of those words. Unfortunately, "capybara" was not available here, and I dislike the nicks with numbers pasted on the end.

McBoingboing actually was available, but I thought better of that idea. :)

So I tried my online name, the one I've had since Hector was a pup, at all kinds of ISP's. Behold, once again, nobody was cantdog here, just as nobody had been cantdog at so many other places on the 'net.

There is another "cantdog," as you find when you google it. Her RL name is doubtless Peavey; she climbs mountains in NH and VT. I've read her blog stuff out of idleness.

I am cantdog on Stumble Upon, too, by the way.

A cantdog is a peavey. It was invented by a fellow named Peavey, who lived in Veazie, Maine, and who never made any money to speak of from the idea, despite the fact that it is an excellent tool to have on a log drive, or indeed anywhere lumbering is done and the trees are not gigantic. They didn't use it in New Zealand for the kauri, but had to use a jack. Kauris are huge huge huge and very dense; you can't shift them with hand tools of the ordinary sort.

I could have used pickaroon, I now note, which is another lumberman's tool, but also one of those words like mukluks. Another failure of the imagination.

I actually wondered about your nickname, thought it might be an anagram. There are hundreds.

You might find a good one for it at Internet Anagram Server

Jesus, I just checked that out--too many to study carefully now--I'll look when I have more time. Thanks.

And by the way Lou, Eric is just fine, unless you like saying Eric Shawn.

Honey...

How did you get yours/come up with yours?

Everyone calls me Honey. I just thought it was the perfect name to use .

What do you think it says about you?

I think that people immediately think that I am a sweet, nice girl with a naughty side.. (They're right!)

Do you think your nickname is a good reflection of who you are?

Yes. See my answer above.

Do you see your online identity in the same way as you see yourself?

Yes and no. I tend to flirt alot more here with people I don't know. I am a huge flirt, which gets me in trouble in real life all the time. Sometimes it's not even what I say, but just a smile I might give to someone who is staring at me.

Do you like it when people shorten your name?

Honestly, I can't remember if anyone calls me Hon -- I do laugh at the Honey-bun that Mat calls me...I thinks it's appropriate considering my AV... But I guess that's not shortening it now is it?

Do you wish they wouldn't shorten it?

Nah...I don't mind it being shortened or made lengthy...It's just nice to be noticed.

If you could choose a different nickname, what would it be?

No. Honey....it's me.

How did you get yours/come up with yours?

I'm a former actor, who got bored of starving and left the business. But once I played Jacob in a stage version of "Jacob the Liar". The name stuck.

What do you think it says about you?
Hopefully nothing. :)

Do you think your nickname is a good reflection of who you are?
A bit of a prankster perhaps.

Do you see your online identity in the same way as you see yourself?
Apart from the name, and the convenience of being able to log off whenever I want to, it's me.

Do you like it when people shorten your name?
To what?

Do you wish they wouldn't shorten it?
To what?

If you would choose a different nickname, what would it be?

Lou :rose:

Well, mine obviosuly says a lot about me.

I like Peanuts. My favourite character is Snoopy. I like cute kiddy-stuff. (see thread about shameful things)

I came up with it, because a friend of mine used to have a ruler in class that had a pic of Snoopy and we came up with the idea to call him SnoopDog (the rapper became famous with us around that time) To use that name instead of just Snoopy stuck.

So when I joined Lit (in order to post my first story) I just had to come up with something, I never expected it to become meaningful. But when I joined these boards it became my 'identity', i.e. Lit's Lil (and I hope cute) Beagle.

I like what it says about me. I only think that sometimes people just see this cute kids-stuff and tend to not take me too seriously; you know, they just go 'awww, that's cute'. That's the only thing that is different in real life because even though I'm humurous, nice, etc. I'm also serious and bad sometimes. (bbbbbb-ad to the bones, bbbbbbb-bad)

I don't mind people using the nick in any way possible, i.e. Snoop, Snoops, SnoopDoggy, whatever. I like it.

I also like the fact to have a minor thing going, that is, often putting some words or anything behind my signature 'Snoopy', (like ''Snoopy, woof'' or ''Snoopy, crawling on top of his kennel'') just to express what I'm feeling, doing, or just to pull a joke.

I don't know whether people notice or like it but no-one ever complained nor mentioned it. i'll keep on doing it though, 'cause I like it.

I don't know what it would be if I had to change it. Probably something very much different. But I'd give it more tought this time than the last time. That's for sure.

Oh, and Lou, even if it has been done before, I like the thread-idea.

Snoopy, woof.

See, people here would call you Fruity...

I’m a chemist, and love mad scientists, so I wanted to be a Doctor or Professor. The name “Dr. Mabeuse” just came to me maybe ten years ago when I needed the name for a story. I thought I’d made it up out of whole cloth.

Then,.a couple of years ago, I was rereading On the Road, and was shocked to see that Kerouac mentions going to see a movie called “The Return of Dr. Mabuse” [sic] in Times Square back in 1948 or something. The movie starred Peter Lorre.

The last time I’d read Road was in high school, so somehow I must have filed that name away in my subconscious, and years and years later pulled it out, thinking I’d invented it.

So I’m Doc, or Mab, or Dr.M. It’s all the same to me.

By the way, it’s pronounced ma BOOSZ, with the sibilant on the end somewhere between “loose” and “ooze”. When I’m feeling sinister I like to drag it out into a little hiss. I decided he was Belgian, though educated in Transylvania and Tblisi (like Cantdog, “Tblisi’s” one of my favorite words to say) and the basments of the University of Krakow. There’s a touch of the Turk in his background too, and he lounges around his Edwardian drawing room in a velvet smoking jacket with a tarbush on his head.

Othertimes I’m Zoot, for when I start taking myself too seriously. “Zoot Mabeuse” has a nice ring to it, and, like Ricjard Feynman, the Doctor has a musical side to his personality. He ocasionally plays baritone sax in Parisian Le Jazz Hot clubs.

---dr.M.

Dr. Mabeuse: there is a poseur in the story pages called Dr. Mabuse. I'm willing to bet that he's no mad scientist and has never seen the basement at the University of Krakow. You should consider having your henchmen dispatch him.

He just got the movie name right, that's all. Ours is an original. Nice tarboosh, Zoot.

I think everyone knows the story of mine already, but I'll repeat it anyway. ;)

My grandmother died when I was fairly young, but she called me "Little Cloud" for as long as I can remember. She said that I was much too serious for such a little child, almost as if I had a cloud following me around (I always picture those comics where a character has a rain cloud that follows them from frame to frame).

Anyway.....around the time I was in junior high, some friends were at my house and overheard someone in my family jokingly call me Little Cloud - and it stuck, just in a shortened version. And I've been Cloudy ever since...there's still people I grew up with that call me by that and nothing else.

What do you think it says about you?

I'm not sure, but I like it anyway. It's almost ethereal sounding, and since I'm very spiritual, I like the connotations.

Do you think your nickname is a good reflection of who you are?

Yes, I do. It's part of me, and almost always has been, so it's just as much a reflection of me, if not more so, than my actual name.

Do you see your online identity in the same way as you see yourself?

What you see is basically what you get, with me. I may flirt a little more online because I know I can get away with it here, but that's about the only difference.

Do you like it when people shorten your name?

The only thing I've seen people shorten it to is "Cloud" or something similar - no big deal. As long as it's nice, I'll answer to it. ;)

Do you wish they wouldn't shorten it?

no, doesn't bother me - I'm easy that way. :D

If you could choose a different nickname, what would it be?

I can't think of anything else I would choose - like I said before, Cloudy is just as much me, if not more so, than Patricia.

Just gotta add this: Everytime I see Dr. M sign one of his posts as "Zoot", I almost hear someone saying "A spanking, a spanking!" :D
