A few weeks back there was a thread about the use of nickel in the new Euro currency being at too high a level.
I sent an e-mail to my Member of the European Parliament and just got this reply today:

Dear Mr [this remains a secret!]
Thank you for your recent email regarding the use of nickel in Euro coins.
With the arrival of the new currency less than a month away, I would like to reassure you that the development of the Euro
coins has been thoroughly researched. Indeed the use of nickel was discussed at length, and it has only been used as part of
a 'high quality alloy' which, it has been agreed poses no risk of skin irritation. In addition its use has been limited to only the 1 Euro and the 2 Euro coins to minimise the risk of counterfeiting.
For further information on the development of the Euro, please see the following publication

I hope this is helpful,
Yours sincerely,
Baroness Sarah Ludford MEP.
