CNN suspends Robert Novak for On-Air Outburst
Fri Aug 5, 2005 6:33 AM IST

By Steve Gorman

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - CNN issued a public rebuke to syndicated columnist and political analyst Robert Novak and asked him to "take some time off" after he uttered a profanity and walked off the set during a live broadcast on Thursday.

The on-air outburst by Novak, 74, came when the conservative commentator was interrupted by liberal political strategist James Carville during a discussion of the upcoming U.S. Senate race in Florida on CNN's "Inside Politics" show.

"Let me finish what I was going to say, James, please. I know you hate to hear me," Novak said as he and Carville jousted over the Senate election chances of Republican U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris.

Carville persisted, saying: "You got to show those right-wingers that he's got backbone. ... the Wall Street Journal editorial page is watching. Show 'em you're tough."

An angry Novak shot back, "I think that's bullshit, and I hate that." Then to the show's host, Ed Henry, he added, "Just let it go," before standing up from his seat, unclipping his microphone and walking off the set.

Carville and Henry continued the discussion without pausing, but Henry acknowledged Novak's departure at the end of the hour, saying he was sorry "Bob Novak left the set a little early."

CNN, a unit of Time Warner Inc., later issued a statement chiding Novak for his conduct.

"Bob Novak's behavior on CNN today was inexcusable and unacceptable," the network said. "Mr. Novak has apologized to CNN, and CNN apologizes to its viewers for his language and actions. We've asked Mr. Novak to take some time off."

Novak has been the subject of intense media interest for months as a central figure in a political scandal involving the public disclosure of CIA agent Valerie Plame's identity and investigations of that leak.

Federal investigators are looking into who leaked the identity of the covert agent, whose name appeared in a July 14, 2003 newspaper column by Novak.

Henry told viewers he had informed Novak in advance of Thursday's show that he intended to ask him on the air about his role in the Plame affair but missed the opportunity when Novak walked off.

A publicist for Novak at CNN said the veteran columnist had no additional comment.

Novak has been a regular CNN contributor since his days as a conservative commentator on the public affairs show "Crossfire." His newspaper column is syndicated nationally.

Well on one you have liberals who silently fume when they get mad and then on the other you have fiesty and easily rattled conservatives who have this temper that makes them repeatedly lose arguments. It's like a political zodiac.

You're right; there is a certain amount of balance.

But I'm not convinced Novak didn't take a dive to avoid forthcoming questions.

That could be the case, but it sounds to me like he just got pissed about being repeatedly interrupted and decided to call it a day before he wasted any more breath. I don't really blame him, but cursing and storming off set like that was fatal.

I doubt either one of you would last 15 minutes with Corporal "Ragin' Cajun" Cueball...

The man hasn't had a civil public discussion in years.

I can only hope for Mary's sake that he is as good with his mouth in bed.

Carvile looks like he gonna bust a blood vessel.

If the clip is slowed down to a still, single frame advance it looks like Carville has a look of regret. At 29 fps or so, it's only visible in one single frame and it might be spittle control instead of remorse.

:D

Novak has had far more reasons to walk off in the past 25 years and always sat and fumed before.

He has put up with too much shit for a paycheck. I am glad he finally said what he was thinking. I actually like Carvile in a weird way. I think it is all a sport to him.

The spittle control theory is much more plausible. :D

I think Novak is beginning to show the strain of the pressure. And being on a show with Carville is not what I would call good "stress management". :catroar:

They're all actors on a stage. I think they should all call bullshit and walk out more often.

Those 'news' analysis shows would be more interesting if they pulled in some elements of the WWF....body slam each other....head-locks...

Now you are talking, the first intelligent use for the WWF I have seen.

By the way, I contribute the election of xlintoon to the direct rise in popularity of the WWF. There is a news story in there somewhere.

yeah there is and it's probable on Drudge.

:D

Yet more evidence that the right wingnuts play better offense than defense.

It's fun to watch the Novaks, the AJs and the Ishmaels sputter in impotent rage when they are challenged.

Great post, the guy is a tool...

Politics a side, he is a loud mouth jerk...

In some ways he is a genious; he plays well to a certain part of the Democrat base. He does tend to grate and to talk over people. I started a tribute alt to him way back when. I'll have to ask Byron for the password...
